Position Type : Regular, Full-time, Approximately 32 hours per week, 40 hours in Summer

FLSA Status : Non-exempt

Salary : $21.50 / hr.

Position Description

The Afterschool Program at Goodman Community Center is a place for children from all backgrounds to play, socialize, learn and grow.

A lead teacher is responsible for the supervision and management of their classroom while supporting GCC goals and outcomes.

The lead teacher plans and carries out daily activities, evaluates the effectiveness of the program and activities, ensure the safety and physical well-being of the children, maintains regular communication with parents, and contributes to the effective operation of the overall childcare program.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • At least a CDA Credential or preferably an associate degree in Early Childhood / Child Development or equivalent, or a baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood / Child Development, or a degree in a related field with course work specifically related to early childhood education.
  • Experience working in a preschool setting.
  • Early Childhood Registry requirements.
  • Commitment to GCC's mission to strengthening lives and securing futures; and values to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of resources in and around the Madison area including resources for childcare programs.
  • Familiarity with State of WI Childcare Licensing Rules and Regulations and City of Madison Accreditation Guidelines.
  • Familiar with Conscious Discipline and Creative Curriculum.
  • Experience working with staff and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences

Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning and implementation of GCC wide family engagement programming.
  • Assist with adherence to standards and ensure the quality of program meets all contract or grant obligations.
  • Maintain portfolios on assigned group of children throughout the school year making sure to include teacher communication, anecdotal notes, work samples, pictures, etc.
  • Respect confidentiality of GCC families and staff.
  • Use pre-program time to plan both long and short range activities in accordance with curriculum objectives, making sure to support developmentally appropriate practice as well as program goals.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
  • Participate in scheduled cleaning of materials and classroom spaces.
  • Maintain classroom organization and rotate materials on a regular basis.
  • Create a culturally inclusive classroom with activities that support different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ensure all children in program are tracked according to GCC expectations.
  • Engage children as individuals in a way that allows them to grow at their own abilities.
  • Work with after school coordinators and co-teachers to develop and maintain classroom curriculum.
  • Communicate with school day teachers to make sure program is meeting the academic needs of children in your assigned classroom group including homework completion.
  • Support children in their social-emotional development using various approaches including Positive Behavior Supports and Conscious Discipline.
  • Assist children in their academics and encourage literacy and math skill building.
  • Maintain daily, open communication with parents.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork to assist with increased communication and participate in parent meetings and scheduled orientations.
  • Communicate child concerns and family needs to after school team.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties of this position.
