Note : The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and / or the City’s step placement policy.
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order : major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees.
Part-time / year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time / year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

JOB SUMMARY
This job is located in the Solid Waste Management Division of the Utilities Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor.
A Refuse Collector I serves as a member of a refuse disposal crew, averaging two to four employees, and must follow specific safety regulations and operations procedures.
- The required knowledge and skills can be acquired on the job. Essential job functions include : driving to retrieve refuse containers from a curb or other designated locations, emptying the contents into a truck bed or refuse compactor, and returning the containers to their previous location;
- operating a truck-mounted refuse compactor; gathering bulky waste, including tree limbs, boards, boxes; etc. and throwing the contents into a truck bed;
- identifying and explaining work schedules or procedures to citizens as required; assisting with vehicle maintenance and traffic monitoring;
directing traffic when necessary; and performing related duties as required and assigned. Work products are subject to direct and continuous review by a working supervisor.
VETERANS PREFERENCE
Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

- Ability to operate auxiliary mechanisms on refuse trucks, including refuse compactors, hydraulic lifts, etc.
- Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).
NOTE : This position may be underfilled as a Refuse Collector Trainee in the event the selected candidate does not possess the required Class B Commercial Driver License.
The employee will be required to possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months of hire / promotion / transfer / demotion.
Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid Class B Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire / promotion / transfer / demotion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Strength enough to lift, push, pull, carry, or throw trash containers weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Stamina enough to exert one’s self physically throughout the workday.
- Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach to pick up trash containers and throw their contents into a truck.
- Mobility enough to walk from place to place throughout the workday.
- Balance enough to ride safely while standing on the back of a truck for short distances.
- Near vision enough to see trash containers and throw its contents into a truck.
- Far vision enough to see oncoming traffic.
- Hearing enough to determine the location of traffic.
- Speech and hearing enough to communicate with co-workers and supervisors.

Note : An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better.
