The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Columbia Health, the Associate Vice President of Medical Services (MS), provides overall leadership of the medical service, identifying strategic goals and maintaining suitable policies and procedures with regard to the delivery of services and program development.

  • Utilizing both medical and operational experience, oversees the day-to-day functions of Medical Services, including Primary Care Practice Teams;
  • telehealth programs; travel-related health; the clinical laboratory; Quality Management (QM) Program; gender-affirming and gender-specific care;

after-hours care; athletic medicine, embedded behavioral health, nutrition services; acupuncture services; and the Continuing Medical Education program.

Oversees the medical director responsibilities of CU-EMS (campus student volunteer ambulance service). Directs work of medical providers, technicians, and support staff involved in providing primary care, urgent and emergency care;

specialty services; and laboratory services. Organizes providers and assures provision of high-quality care by building an understanding of student health needs, reviewing care provided, fostering communication among and between staff, and securing necessary resources.

Develops and sustains collaboration among staff, University stakeholders, and the upper Manhattan specialist and hospital networks, to ensure a smoother flow of patients, continuity of care, and quality management.

This is an essential, onsite role.

Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership (50%)

  • Establishes, maintains, and evaluates a supportive, highly collaborative, evidence-based, flexible, and student-centered approach to treatment.
  • Directs patient care and related services.
  • With designated members of provider and technician groups, directs the development of unified clinical care policies and procedures which apply to all staff.
  • Develops and oversees a quality management program including chart audits, benchmarking, KPIs, and peer review
  • Works with individual providers and staff on standards of care and quality management. Provides regular quality management reports to the Senior Vice President, Columbia Health, and the Governing Body.
  • Manages concerns, complaints, suggestions, and feedback from patients and others regarding clinical services and takes appropriate action to assess and improve access and care.
  • Supervises CLIA-waived onsite laboratory, laboratory vendor partnerships, and ensures appropriate and timely follow-up of all laboratory results.
  • Oversees and continually seeks to improves after-hours care. Gathers data and performs quality management assessment of after-hours on-call services.
  • From a clinical perspective, oversees ongoing upgrades and implementation of the Electronic Health Record system, working in close collaboration with Columbia Health IT and other IT partners.
  • Maintains and supports collaboration of staff-particularly focusing on continuity of care, evidence-informed practice, and teamwork in the management of complex cases.
  • Ensures integration with other departments across Columbia Health and the University, with a primary focus on a seamless student experience.
  • Continuously develops and maintains collaborative relationships with a network of specialists providing complementary student-centered patient care.

Operational Leadership (35%)

  • Responsible for developing and implementing moderate and long-range strategic planning for Medical Services, Travel Medicine, Behavioral Health, the clinical laboratory, and other important clinical programs.
  • Provides leadership to, and direct oversight of, teaching programs within Medical Services.
  • Directs organizational needs and develops, implements, and continuously evaluates policies and procedures.
  • Recruits and retains clinical and support staff.
  • Reviews performance of all staff on a regular basis with strong focus on goal-directed, evidence-informed evaluations.
  • Organizes quality of care and provision of services review in relation to standards of accrediting and governmental agencies.
  • Supervises and collaborates with staff and with oversight agencies around issues of accreditation of Medical Services, including the clinical laboratory.
  • Ensures preparation for and successful maintenance of accreditation.
  • Responds to citations and develops corrective action plans.
  • Collaborates with other Columbia Health staff and University stakeholders to provide outreach, orientation, and information to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Participates in the Columbia Health senior leadership team. Works collaboratively to support the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for Columbia Health.
  • Represents Medical Services as part of Columbia Health's emergency management planning and participates in Columbia University's emergency planning and response process.
  • Represents the Columbia Health Senior Vice President on clinical leadership matters in their absence or as delegated.

Patient Care (10%)

Attends to patient care needs in Medical Services with particular attention to students' developmental needs and requirements, national guidelines for the delivery of excellent care, patient-provider continuity and the Medical Home, efficiency, confidentiality, follow-up, and prevention.

Perform other duties as assigned (5%).

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD, DO, DNP, or other equivalent clinical degree.
  • New York State License and Board Certification in related specialty required.
  • Experience seeing patients in a primary care setting and working in an evidence-informed practice.
  • 10+ years of clinical ambulatory care experience which includes 5+ years of direct and increasing managerial experience, including supervising clinical and non-clinical staff and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with areas of support for clinical care such as laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, budget analysis and management, quality assurance, electronic record keeping, and specialty consultation.
  • Increasing responsibility for working with, developing, and evaluating a large health care provider staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with providers from multiple disciplines and ability to coordinate activities of many providers in a complex health care delivery system.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A willingness to work through difficult problems with patience and an inclusive leadership style that inspires others.
  • Strong computer skills, especially in electronic health records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a college health environment.
  • Specialization in internal medicine, adolescent medicine, medicine-pediatrics, family medicine, or emergency medicine.
  • Current faculty appointment at well recognized academic medical center.
  • Experience with continuing medical education and research activities.
  • Experience with accreditation, especially AAAHC.
