THE PLACE
Shepherd’s Door, Portland Rescue Mission’s women and children's facility, is set in a retreat-like setting located in East Portland, designed specifically to support the transformation and growth of women, and women with children, impacted by homelessness, addiction, and other life traumas.
Shepherd's Door provides a 5-week program, a 12-month program, and additional transition programs that are Christ-centered, residential programs integrating addiction recovery, life skills training, vocational development, and spiritual growth in a safe, highly relational environment.
This 42,000 square foot facility has the capacity to serve 42 adults and 25 children.
The Harbor, Portland Rescue Mission’s men’s facility, located in NE Portland, is designed to support the restoration and growth of men impacted by homelessness, addiction, and life crises.
This facility integrates addiction recovery, life-skills training, vocational development and spiritual growth in a safe, highly-relational environment.
The ministry team of staff, interns, and volunteers serves to model Christ-like living to support the up to 38 participants in achieving lasting transformation.
THE POSITION
The Wellness Nurse is responsible to advance the overall health and wellness of Shepherd’s Door (SD) and The Harbor (TH) program participants resulting in their holistic growth towards life transformation.
The Wellness Nurse will ensure that program participants experience growth in understanding and application of health and wellness, address urgent and preventative health issues, successfully navigate the health care system, and are equipped for long-term success in their personal healthcare.
This person will join a current Wellness Nurse, creating a team of 2 serving both Shepherd's Door and The Harbor.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Provide classroom sessions and regular one on one meetings so that program participants demonstrate the understanding and value of a holistic approach to overall well-being, taking an active role in their wellness (medical, dental, and mental health), fitness, and nutrition
- Through informal and formal one on one meetings, program participants will experience measured growth in wellness, fitness, and nutrition, equipping them for a long-term healthy lifestyle
- Equip program participants to take ownership of their healthcare while supporting them with OHP enrollment, urgent healthcare needs, ongoing healthcare concerns, and their navigation of the healthcare system
- Document meetings with participants, participant progress, and other significant activities in Resident Tracker database ensuring New Life staff are aware of participant growth
- Support The Harbor and Shepherd's Door staff with healthcare related questions or issues that impact individuals and / or the program participant community
- Support intake staff as they discern medical needs of new applicants to determine appropriate fit for program
- Mobilize medical volunteers and interns into meaningful ministry opportunities, including overseeing partnerships with local nursing programs
- Develop, collaborate, and cultivate relationships with medical agencies to identify resources and programs that will support the program participants in their wellness goals and needs
- Oversee health room so that meds, supplies, and resources are organized, managed according to healthcare best practices and easily accessible by all staff
- Share a clear message of the Gospel when opportunities arise in day-to-day interactions with program participants
- Engage New Life program participants with Christian care as they seek guidance and input, including offering prayer and scripturally based solutions to mental and physical health issues
BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Registered Nurse (RN) with current Oregon license (BSN preferred or experience equivalent), or LPN
- General awareness and basic knowledge of chemical dependency and addiction recovery
- Prior Christian Ministry experience (volunteer or paid) serving people in a relational manor
- Proficient in communication, documentation, organization, scheduling and group and classroom participation
- A personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and a testimony of continued growth in faith
- Ministers as a highly-relational, Christ-centered, joyful servant
- Spiritual maturity as defined by traditional Biblical standards
- Adheres to Portland Rescue Mission's Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics
- Desire to serve God in ministry to hurting men, women and children
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
