At Houston Methodist the Nurse Scientistposition is responsible for leading the development coordinationimplementation evaluation and dissemination of nursing researchactivities.
This position works closely with the Director andManager for Nursing Science to strategically plan and outlinepriority initiatives based on hospital quality measures.
The NurseScientist position ensures the highest quality of scholarly andscientific activity by Houston Methodist nursing staff.
Thisposition serves as a role model and consultant related to thenursing research process and coordinates the IRB approval and grantfunding process for nursing research.

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Servesas a consultant to nursing leadership executives and nurses todevelop implement and sustain evidencebased high impactinitiatives.

Promotessupports and facilitates individuals engaging in researchactivities to advance research in practice : evidencebased practicethe conduct of research research utilization and researchdissemination.
Collaborates and develops innovative programs toeducate mentor and enhance the knowledge of nursingstaff.
- Serves as an activemember of the Research Council. Coordinates guides leads andprovides support for council activities and serves as the liaisonto the nursing shared governancestructure.
- Conducts selfin a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity equity andinclusion principles. Fosters staff engagement by demonstratingactive listening requesting and acknowledging feedback providingrationale when appropriate and supporting organizational goals.
Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employeeengagement i.e. peertopeeraccountability.

- Facilitates anddirects the development of interdepartmental and interprofessionalresearch activities including generating individual and / or groupprograms ofresearch.
- Encourages andpromotes nursing publications in peer reviewedjournals.
QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Identifies nursingquality metrics outliers and creates evidencebased nursinginterventions for improvement. Supports hospital efforts to improvequality care linking research to improved patientoutcomes.
- Plans directsand ensures execution and sustainability of all initiatives toensure that the goals of the program are met.
In collaboration withthe Director develops program outcome measures and monitors forsustainability.
Conductsinvestigatorinitiated research that supports and adds to nursingsscientificfoundation.
FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Seeksresearch funding through grant application. Assists departments andindividual healthcare professionals to apply and obtain suchfunding for research projects andactivities.
- Implementsdepartment strategies to achieve financial target and mentorsothers to do the same optimizing efficiency and other areasaccording to departmentspecifications.
- Utilizesresources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind.Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectively andprioritize daily tasks assisting coworkers asneeded.
GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Developsinitiatives and held accountable for increasing the number of HMnursing research EBP and quality improvement disseminationactivities at the national and internationallevel.
- Generates andcommunicates new ideas to lead teams to creative strategies thatimprove quality or service and impact entity departments andaddress organization or department priorities.
Analyzes andpresents research and quality improvementdata.
Fosters aninstitutional environment conducive to the conduct of inquiryresearch and evidencebased practice as evidenced by the number ofnursegenerated projects.
Seeks opportunities to identifyselfdevelopment needs and takes appropriate action. Ensures owncareer discussions occur with appropriate management.
Completes andupdates the My Development Plan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION
- Bachelorsand Masters degree one of which must be innursing
- Doctoral degree inmedical field
WORKEXPERIENCE
Five yearsclinical nursing experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED
- RN Registered NurseTexas State Licensure and / or Compact State Licensure within 60 days OR
- RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
- Magnet ANCC RecognizedCertification within 1 year
