Job Summary :
The School Social Worker will identify, assess, evaluate and provide, if needed, social work services to special education
students and their families
Essential Functions :
- Assists staff with determining appropriate data collection methods, evaluates observation data and makes recommendations to the building team and building administrator that may include plan modifications or new strategy implementation.
- May design and implement behavior management plans, consult with general and special education teachers and provide case management for students and families requiring multiple services.
- Participates in student assessment meetings, IEP’s, and parent conferences as required.
- Data Management
- Provides staff with research based behavior intervention techniques.
- Meets with the Director of Special Education to provide reports and tracking of students’ information.
- Meets with building principal and building professional learning communities to determine the training and consultation needed to support general education students with behavioral difficulties.
- Makes visits to homes and other agencies / organizations.
- Assists parents and families in participating fully with their children’s educational process.
- Works with a wide age range of children and young adults.
- Utilizes behavior management techniques.
- Provides casework and / or group work to eligible children and families.
- Provides individual and / or group counseling services to eligible special education students.
- Responsible for carrying out the Special Education policies and procedures in all assigned buildings.
- Maintains a written log of current caseload and other required documentation.
- Develops and implements plans to enhance students’ school success.
- Prepares social or developmental histories on children with disabilities.
- Identifies and reports child abuse and neglect situations.
- Mobilizes school and community resources to optimize student’s potential to learn in their educational program.
- Collaborates with community agencies and organizations.
- Coordinates services for individual families.
Qualifications :
Education : Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited college or university. Valid Master’s Social Work License.
Fulfills requirements for approval as a School Social Worker.
Experience : Previous social work experience in a public school setting or related agency preferred. Previous experience in Collaborative Evaluation Teams.
Skills :
A school social worker shall possess applicable knowledge of individual, family, group and community dynamics as well as mental health concepts and behavior which result from mental, physical, sensory, emotional, speech, or any other handicapping condition or any other competencies as listed in Rule of the Michigan Special Education Rules and Regulations.
Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and requirements.
Ability to provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluations of children suspected of being emotionally impaired and autism spectrum disordered.
Ability to provide appropriate direct or indirect treatment services to individuals, groups, families and the school community.
Ability to work with community resources and make appropriate referrals.
