As a member of the University of Washington Foster School of Business Information Technology team, our Systems Administrator will play a crucial role in advancing education in Washington State and beyond by supporting both teaching and research.
Our cross-functional unit is dedicated to the success of a nationally top-rated business school. We seek an expert in both on-premises and cloud information technology infrastructure who is enthusiastic about supporting the service platform that underpins our success.
We are looking for a candidate who :
- is proficient in Microsoft Active Directory, Group Policy, and Windows system administration
- has experience in deploying and supporting reliable services on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Pantheon
- can specify, configure, and support services for remote deployment and management of Windows servers and applications, ensuring they remain updated (e.g., SCCM or WSUS)
- possesses a strong understanding of information technology security, with the ability to update and document our information security controls and operational practices
- has experience in supporting Mac OS within a predominantly Windows environment
- excels at consulting with stakeholders, analyzing their needs, researching solutions, and then recommending, planning, deploying, and supporting stable IT solutions to meet those needs
Our Systems Administrator implements best practices and guidelines for Foster’s IT efforts. They must stay current with the latest technology to make appropriate recommendations regarding system selection, maintenance, and upgrades.
The successful candidate must work collaboratively with cross-discipline peers to provide exceptional customer service to University community members, including faculty, staff, and students with diverse technology skills and experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations (60%)
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of a complex computing and network environment that includes on-prem and cloud servers and services, on-prem and mobile workstations, printers, and networked appliances.
- Analyze and resolve issues with complex systems consisting of servers, workstations, mobile devices, and cloud services.
- In collaboration with the central University of Washington Information Technology (UW-IT) department, analyze, test, document, and troubleshoot a large and complex network spanning multiple TCP / IP subnets and physical locations.
- Ensure high service availability.
- Develop and maintain operational documentation of IT servers and services.
- Research, recommend, and implement information management process and procedure best practices to ensure that all UW Foster School of Business data is protected through appropriate security, redundancy, and backups.
- Maintain, investigate, design, and configure remote access services to support global productivity.
- Analyze and revise UW Foster’s IT systems to ensure they are compliant and consistent with guidance and regulations from UW-IT and the UW CISO, FERPA, the UW Human Subject Review Board, and the UW Administrative Policy.
- Work with the Foster’s marketing team to evaluate, procure, and support a robust and reliable web hosting platform (WPEngine, Pantheon, etc.
that supports the school website.
Continuous Service Improvement (20%)
Using their knowledge of the state of the art, and leveraging expert-level experience, the Systems Administrator will identify and recommend system and service upgrades, additions, and retirements to maintain a modern, stable IT infrastructure.
Technical Consultation (15%)
- Participate in consultations with Foster’s departments and functional units, analyze their unique business requirements, and design and deploy sustainable infrastructure strategies.
- Participate in consultations with Foster’s Instructional Services to deploy and maintain media and web services to support their mission.
Other duties (5%)
Perform other duties as required to support the ongoing mission and strategic plans of the UW Foster School of Business.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Minimum two (2) years or more of increasing responsibilities while delivering information technology services in a complex higher education environment.
- Equivalent education / experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license / certification / registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work independently, handle confidential information responsibly, and manage multiple projects with critical deadlines simultaneously.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience running highly available services on public cloud infrastructures (i.e., Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud)
- Industry qualification certificates such as MCSA, MCSE, CompTIA, CCNA
- Experience using Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policies as a foundation for highly available systems and services
- A deep understanding of TCP / IP networks and related technology, including addressing, subnetting, DHCP, DNS and domain registration, SSL certificates, and Firewalls
- Experience provisioning, and deploying IT cloud-based infrastructures
- Expertise with federated Authentication using Shibboleth, SAML, ADFS or LDAP
