Position Highlights : Observation Unit
- Number of beds on unit : 35
- Patient population (age, diagnosis, specifics about unit) : The Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that provides acute care for issues ranging from cardiac, to general surgery, to behavioral health.
Patients receive holistic care with a goal length of stay of 24-48 hours.
- Nurse to Patient ratio : 1 : 5-6
- Department culture and resources : The Observation unit is a fast-pace, team-oriented unit. It offers a robust Partnership Committee, a unit-based educator, nurse supervisors, charge nurses, and a discharge nurse.
- Frequent nursing skills / equipment used : Foley / IV / NG insertions, Nursing prioritization, IV pumps, Lift equipment, SCDs, Telemetry monitoring, Patient connection
- Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service. Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
- Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and patient and family needs.
Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
- Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and / or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
- Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
- Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
- Assess IV sites every 4 hours. Start new IVs per Carle policy
- Must maintain documentation standards as evidenced by passed quarterly chart audits
- Must attend 5 out 6 staff meetings per year
- Identify change in patient status and respond appropriately
