Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts, the Associate Director will be responsible for designing and implementing major gifts strategies to increase philanthropic support for Brigham and Women’s Hospital with a particular focus on specialties within the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatric Newborn Medicine and other areas as assigned.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts in the six- and seven-figure range, and be directly responsible for annually raising a minimum of $1M.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors for assigned Departments in compliance with patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Identify, cultivate, and attract volunteer leadership for assigned department(s), building a cadre of leaders who are capable of and willing to give to and advocate on behalf of this area of excellence.
  • Effectively staff physicians of the assigned Departments in their development activities, meeting with them to provide updates on development progress, providing research and strategies on prospects and helping to bring new prospects to the table.
  • Encourage and guide faculty involvement in the development process from identification to solicitation.
  • Coordinate activities closely with the entire Brigham and Women’s development team and contribute to the creation of strong working relationships within the department.
  • Build the development program to the level required to accomplish annual office wide goals and campaign initiatives as appropriate.
  • Work successfully in a highly enterprising, results-oriented, fast-paced environment, where the team is proactive and focused on advancing prospects towards closing gifts.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience in development.
  • Experience with medical fundraising either in a hospital or an academic medical center would be strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge / skills with the Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database software and scheduling / organizing software;

and must have exceptional customer service skills. Blackbaud CRM experience is preferred.

  • Appreciation for and an ability to articulate and convey the mission of assigned department(s), the BWH, curriculum, and programs.
  • The intellectual depth and maturity to garner the trust and confidence of the leadership of assigned Department(s), other faculty, and administrators, as well as volunteers and appreciative patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance the time of senior volunteers, academic, clinical, and administrative staff in contacts with donors.
  • Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts from individuals.
  • The ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships across a complex organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work autonomously under pressure of multiple and sequential target times.
  • Enthusiasm, ability to try new things, the courage to speak and act on convictions, intelligence, insight, initiative, resilience, and the ability to act on their own initiative.
  • Willingness to travel (although most patients / prospects / donors reside in the New England region).
