CEILS Assistant Director for Future Faculty Development

Position description

The Assistant Director for Future Faculty Development will develop, implement, and sustain programming that supports graduate students (GS) and postdoctoral scholars (PS) by participating in the Center for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning at UCLA (CIRTL @UCLA) program.

Responsibilities are to implement and expand the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL@UCLA) program, advance the certification process and engagement pathways and support GS / PS holistic professional development.

These efforts include teaching CIRTL in person and online courses, delivering instructional materials to support student participation in CIRTL programming, as well as creating and supporting learning communities focused on professional development opportunities that will better prepare UCLA graduate students and postdoctoral scholars for the STEM workforce.

The candidate should have knowledge and experience in equitable and inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices.

This position will be under the direct supervision of Dr. Rachel Kennison, Executive Director of CEILS and Administrative Leader of .

Responsibilities :

Advance CIRTL@UCLA Engagement Pathways

Recruit UCLA STEM graduate students and postdocs to participate in online cross-network events and local CIRTL programming to expand participation in the program by offering information sessions, Teaching-as-Research watch parties, award ceremonies.

Track participation of students, administer certificates; write and present an annual report to the CIRTL Advisory Board and submit data to the National network.

Coordinate with the Teaching and Learning Center as well as other UCLA Initiatives that can be included in the CIRTL certification program (e.

g. UCLA’s IRACDA program, CUTF)

Engagement with CIRTL network

Facilitate / co-facilitate an online cross - network CIRTL course, workshop, or other training event as part of UCLA’s in-kind contribution to the CIRTL network.

Represent UCLA at annual CIRTL in-person and virtual network events and meetings.

Attend monthly CIRTL Network meetings.

Marketing and Promotion

Curate, update and develop the CIRTL@UCLA website and monthly newsletter, and promote all cross-network and local events at UCLA via email, social media, and other relevant communication channels.

Identify events and other professional development opportunities for promotion as well as share updates on programming and initiatives via these communication channels.

Campus wide and Regional outreach

Engage with cross-campus partners, including the career center, to promote cross campus participation in the multidisciplinary engagement pathway courses (Grad PD 496A,B,C, Career Readiness), Mol Bio 497 (Career Readiness Inside and Outside the Academy).

Maintain regional relationships that support direct connections to teaching experiences at colleges in the Los Angeles area (LACCD Project Match and similar internship experiences);

disseminate information on employment and training opportunities to CIRTL@UCLA network.

Organize events including CIRTL online panels to support career exploration and hiring practices at 2-yr and 4-yr institutions.

Curriculum, Instruction and Mentoring

Teach the CIRTL@UCLA in-person courses, Grad PD 496A (An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate Teaching), Grad PD 496B (Teaching-as-Research), Grad PD 496C (Implementing Teaching-as-Research).

Mentor CIRTL participants in their Professional Development and Teaching as Research Projects.

Partner with the UCLA career center to develop and teach Mol Bio 497 (Career Readiness Inside and Outside the Academy).

Develop, organize and facilitate quarterly workshops on inclusive teaching, effective communication and organizational skills, and other areas critical to graduate students and postdocs including self-care and balancing research, service and teaching.

In collaboration with CEILS Executive Director and CEILS Associate Director for Data Science Supporting Student Success, engage in assessment of the CIRTL program, making recommendations for curricular improvement, developing and implementing new instructional approaches and course materials.

Communicate effectively to coordinate scheduling of rooms for lectures and office hours; complete other administrative duties related to instruction and coordination of courses.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a STEM discipline, or a PhD in education with masters degree in a STEM field, demonstrated experience in undergraduate and graduate teaching at the university level, experience in curriculum development (i.

e. design, evaluate and improve instructional materials), and familiarity with current research on the science of learning and inclusive, equitable teaching practices at the post-secondary level.

Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact effectively in programs and activities involving diverse faculty, staff, and students of differing social, educational, economic backgrounds.

Ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of the Center, College and University.

Preferred skills include experience with event planning, website management, social media, and online communication strategies.
