The CVOR is currently hiring for an experienced RN Unit Supervisor. The CVOR is located on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus within the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute for adult cardiac surgery and Inova Women's and Children's Hospital for pediatric / congenital cardiac surgery.

The CVORs are state of the art with Stryker integrated video and a Philips (Single Plane) Hybrid OR with a total of 7 operating rooms serving all cardiac surgery needs including thoracic organ transplant (heart & lung), mechanical circulatory support, structural heart, congenital, and advanced aortic surgery.

We were name the 9th busiest Transplant Program in the nation in 2023.

Job Summary

The Cardiovascular Operating Room Services Leader ensures the effective and efficient functioning of the unit and the achievement of optimal patient outcomes.

Delivers safe, high quality and cost-effective preoperative services. Serves as a clinical leader and resource for the assigned surgical specialty and / or unit while ensuring unit compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements and the Joint Commission standards.

Ensures practice improvements by providing direction and guidance to others regarding preoperative services and specialty.

Utilizes the Joint Commission standards and AORN nursing practice tools to support a surgical care delivery system that produces quality care with optimal outcomes.

Job Responsibilities

Ensures the effective and efficient functioning of the unit and the achievement of optimal patient outcomes. Delivers safe, high quality and cost-effective preoperative services.

Demonstrates an integrated approach toward case / patient outcomes.

• Inventories existing pathways and assists team members in identifying appropriate plans of care. Recognizes points at which variances frequently occur, appropriately studies variances for trends and implements appropriate strategies to respond.
• Identifies strategies for cost-effective and efficient practices without compromising preoperative patient safety or outcomes.

Promotes creative thinking among staff, peers and colleagues to develop new and innovative devices, practices and strategies to advance and improve preoperative nursing services.

• Serves as primary liaison, clinical lead and resource for the assigned surgical specialty and / or unit while ensuring unit compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements and the Joint Commission standards.
• Adheres to all Inova Health System's policies and procedures while coaching staff on compliance and consistently identifying clinical and operational variables affecting patient and case outcomes.

Makes clinical decisions based on education and experience while integrating varied patient experiences into clinical decision-making.

Mentors team members in identifying intra-operative outcomes.

• Ensures practice improvements by serving as role model, providing direction and providing guidance to others regarding preoperative services and specialty.
• Acts as a change agent while producing cogent and persuasive written materials to address nursing, healthcare and organizational issues to the appropriate audience.
• Utilizes the Joint Commission standards and AORN nursing practice tools to support a surgical care delivery system that produces quality care with optimal outcomes.
• Collaborates with leadership on unit participation for emergency preparedness activities. Conducts education and coordinates emergency / trauma surgical skill training in addition to participating in unit-specific drills.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Certification - Basic Life Support (AHA); within 12 months of hire certification must be : Certified Surgical Services Manager Credential, Nurse Executive (Certified Nurse Administration - CNA), Certified Nurse Operating Room, or CCRN.

Licensure - Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse.

Experience - 3 years of clinical experience related to the CVOR scope.

Education - BSN- bachelor's degree in nursing.
