Deputy Director of Salesforce & Information Systems

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press seeks a Deputy Director of Salesforce and Information Systems to support the data, information systems, and technology needs of a growing nonprofit organization.

The position includes a combination of Salesforce database administration, data hygiene and security oversight, and information and impact analysis, and requires working strategically with leadership across the fundraising, operations, communications, and legal teams.

During a period of rapid organizational growth, the Reporters Committee has expanded to over 40 employees and a large national constituency of clients, partners, and donors.

We have significantly invested in and expanded our data infrastructure and data keeping, primarily through Salesforce (Nonprofit Success Pack) with active legal matters set to be managed in Clio.

As the organizational data needs continue to evolve, the Deputy Director of Salesforce and Information Systems will oversee the health and effectiveness of the Salesforce database, ensure its successful integration with key third-party data systems, and leverage the data tools to build organizational impact in legal programming, communications, and fundraising.

Additionally, this individual will be responsible for ensuring timely system updates and data integrity, managing data in line with best practices, general maintenance and upkeep, efficient handling of issues / support tickets, and project support as needed while proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and efficiencies.

In management responsibilities, the Deputy Director of Salesforce and Information Systems will supervise the Data Specialist as well as external information technology and data security vendors, and lead the strategic decisions, operations, and growth of the Data team.

This organized, detail-oriented, and process-driven thinker will understand the value of timely, accurate, and easily accessible data, and will enjoy improving our systems and processes.

The role provides a great opportunity for a motivated professional to help shape the Reporters Committee’s successful use of Salesforce and Clio data, supporting the effectiveness of our staff and enabling more robust data collection and evaluation tools to advance organizational learning.

This position is based in Washington, DC and will report to the Director of Development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage Salesforce database, including performing maintenance, security protocols, and user management;
  • Implement new configurations and updates as needed, including creation of custom objects and fields, workflows, email alerts, and page layouts;
  • Manage all system releases for Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP), and integrated apps;
  • Automate processes using Salesforce tools such as workflows and validation rules;
  • Manage interfaces between Salesforce and organizational tools (Pardot, iATS, QuickBooks, Box, SharePoint, Clio);
  • Provide support to Salesforce users in development, communications, operations, and legal teams through help desk and tutorials;
  • Develop and implement consistent and quality Salesforce training for all database users to ensure timely, comprehensive, and accurate recordkeeping of legal, communications, financial, and development data and foster a metric-driven culture;
  • Ensure consistent and best-practices use of Salesforce for record keeping storage of information and work-products (includes legal hotline notes, amicus briefs, and media content, as well as development and communications data, products, etc.);

Information Systems & Data Analytics

  • Supervise data maintenance protocols and formal processes around tracking and reporting within and across teams;
  • Turn indicators of organizational health (fundraising, communications, outreach) into dashboards and visualization opportunities for outreach, publicity, engagement, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with Data Specialist in tailoring dashboards, reports to support special projects and organizational goals, and in data management and protocols;
  • Track trending user shortfalls for purposes of improved staff training and to troubleshoot and correct system obstacles that cause data problems;
  • Provide oversight and implementation of consistent organization-wide strategies and structures associated with data collection and analysis to measure success and areas for improvement on programs;
  • Work with legal team to document that data systems can track and report on key metrics and measurable outcomes to provide tangible outcomes and show quantitative impact;
  • Audit programmatic data systems regularly to ensure the integrity, timeliness, and comprehensiveness of the data and metrics to drive the success of the organization;
  • Monitor and spot-check data entry protocols and train legal team in correcting any identified shortcomings in data protocol and hygiene
  • Ensure that all systems and technology infrastructure for data collection, management, evaluation, and feedback meet the organization’s needs;
  • Manage IT consultants’ technical support for organization’s IT infrastructure (hardware, software, network, subscriptions, backup services, etc.) as needed;
  • Help administer any new technology and systems setup and migration;
  • Lead and implement IT and cybersecurity strategy

Minimum Requirements

  • Salesforce Administrator certification required (minimum of 6-8 years)
  • Salesforce Advanced Administrator certification and familiarity with key third-party integrations preferred;
  • Experience in Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing and managing a team or direct report;
  • Commitment to the mission of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press;

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range, based on experience, is $98,400-$114,300 for a candidate based in Washington, D.C. Our generous benefit package should also be considered.

For all regular full-time positions, the Reporters Committee offers :

  • A competitive base salary with 3 weeks paid time off, 4 annual floating days, and all Federal holidays;
  • A retirement savings plan, including a 5% employer contribution after 3 months of employment;
  • Comprehensive employer paid insurance coverage, including medical, dental, vision, life and accidental death, and disability;
  • Ability to use pre-tax dollars for dependent care, medical and commuting expenses.
