Overview

This experienced environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) professional trains, supports, and mentors PPPL employees, supervisors, managers, subcontractors, collaborators, and students in a wide range of ES&H training courses to enable the safe execution of PPPL’s important scientific research mission.

The Training Specialist collaborates with subject matter experts and managers to develop, enhance, and deliver impactful training in both the in-person and virtual learning environments, utilizing techniques that help learners of varied abilities and backgrounds grasp the crucial concepts that strengthen our culture of conducting safe and impactful science and supporting PPPL’s core values of responsibility, innovation, safety, and engagement.

Collaborate with the Environment, Safety & Health team to develop, enhance, and deliver impactful training in both the in-person and virtual learning environments, utilizing techniques that help learners of varied abilities and backgrounds grasp the crucial concepts to enable safe and healthy work.

This includes training and guiding PPPL employees, supervisors, managers, subcontractors, collaborators, and students in a wide range of ES&H subject areas to enable the safe execution of our research and operations following the Guiding Principles and Core Functions of Integrated Safety Management (ISM).

Depending on qualifications and experience, the Training Specialist may also enhance the ES&H team’s oversight function by conducting field visits, walkthroughs, and inspections of active construction projects and experimental areas with the goal of enhancing worker understanding of hazards, hazard mitigations, and resilience to changing conditions.

These efforts are aimed at strengthening safe work planning and execution, organizational learning, inclusion, and psychological safety.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Collaborate with ES&H subject matter experts (SMEs) and HR Training Office to design, plan, enhance, organize, and deliver targeted ES&H training for PPPL staff, subcontractors, collaborators, and students, using both in-person and virtual classrooms.
  • Coordinate training, testing, proficiency evaluations, and training records with SMEs and HR Training Office.
  • Collaborate with SMEs as needed to coach and mentor trainees to ensure adequate understanding of applicable ES&H principles, requirements, and practices.
  • Establish rapport with line management and SMEs to foster collaboration and continual learning in the context of delivering impactful ES&H training.
  • Collaborate with line management and HR Training Office to ensure that organizational training matrices accurately reflect appropriate ES&H training requirements.
  • Maintain awareness and competence in pertinent aspects of ES&H regulations, especially 10 CFR 851 and parallel OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910 and 1926), EPA regulations (40 CFR), DOT (49 CFR), as well as other subject matter areas, including the applicable DOE Directives, Manuals and

Guidance Documents.

  • Coordinate and conduct regular assessments of ES&H training programs and supporting classes and facilitate the development of corrective / preventive actions to enable continual improvement and organizational learning.
  • Support the Occupational Safety & Health and Construction & Project Safety teams with occasional field visits, walkthroughs, inspections, assessments, etc. as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by ES&H or Laboratory management.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, physical sciences, engineering, or education.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in occupational, industrial or construction safety oversight, and safety training.
  • Advanced degree or teaching experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages is beneficial but not required.
  • Familiarity with radiological safety principles is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience in the DOE National Laboratory complex, chemical industry, heavy construction, research, or higher education settings preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent understanding of ES&H regulations, especially occupational, industrial, and construction health and safety. Understanding of environmental regulations and radiological protection is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to understand regulatory and organizational training requirements and to develop applicable training materials such as presentations, visual aids, student guides, workbooks, exercises, exams, proficiency demonstrations, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to enable inclusive collaboration in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of ES&H training programs that enable world-leading scientific research.
  • Strong organizational skills as demonstrated by the ability to handle multiple activities with overlapping timelines and deliverables in a dynamic environment.

Certificates and Licenses

  • REQUIRED : CSP, CIH, CHST or other safety professional qualification, OSHA 30-hr General Industry and / or Construction, OSHA 510.
  • PREFERRED : OSHA 500, additional OSHA training (scaffolding, excavation, confined space, LOTO, , supplemental ES&H training or continuing education, state teacher certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical strength and agility to conduct training including lecture, demonstration, coaching and evaluation of safety & health skills as well as to conduct field visits to laboratories, industrial areas, and construction sites, including outdoor sites in all seasons.
  • Must be comfortable in and around industrial and construction sites with multiple potential hazards, including radiation.

Working Conditions

Most of the work will be conducted in general office areas during normal working hours. Some training and field visits may be in laboratory, industrial, or construction areas and may be outdoors.

Some training and field visits may take place during off-hours and weekends, depending on project and operational schedules.
