University Academic Programs comprises multiple programs that advance the academic mission of the University by providing enhanced academic programs that have the potential to reach every student and consists of the following programs : Living & Learning Communities, Center for Community Engagement to advance Scholarship & Learning, University Honors Programs, Undergraduate Research Center, First Year Seminar, the One Book One DU program, Interterm, and the University Writing Program.

The unit is also responsible for the undergraduate common curriculum, university-wide student learning outcomes, student success and persistence initiatives, academic standards and academic appeals, and maintains institutional accreditation.

Position Summary

We are seeking applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor position in the University of Denver Writing Program to join a dynamic group of faculty, whose collective teaching, service, and scholarship displays the many ways in which we conceive of and teach writing.

The positions is a fully benefited(insurance, retirement, professional development, annual merit review) 9-month positions with multiple-year appointments.

The position is promotable through a series that includes Teaching Associate and Teaching Full Professor. Faculty teach a series of six sections of first-year writing per year in a quarter system, usually in a 0 / 3 / 3 schedule, in small sections generally capped at 16 students.

Especially in fall and throughout the year, they participate in program and professional development; provide program / campus leadership and support for writing performing a variety of professional service;

and are active in the wider discipline of writing studies.

Essential Functions

Our program is committed to developing and deepening a love of writing in first-year students. To that end, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Teaching six sections of first-year writing per year in a quarter system, usually with a 0 / 3 / 3teaching load.
  • Committing to inclusive writing / literacy pedagogical practices.
  • Actively engaging in program, campus, and professional service.
  • Providing program / campus leadership and support for writing.
  • Completing service annually through a project or the equivalent which accounts for the 7thuniversity teaching faculty course assignment.
  • Engaging through professional participation and scholarship with the wider discipline of writing studies.
  • Assisting in creating a culture of linguistic justice on campus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Writing faculty in the Teaching Professor series contribute to the programs mission on campus.
  • Familiar with current research, theory, and pedagogies in the discipline of writing studies.
  • Work effectively within the professional community of the writing program.

Required Qualifications

ABD (with expectation of degree completion before beginning), or PhD in Writing, Rhetoric, or Composition Studies; English;

or closely related field or equivalent terminal degree.

  • At least three years successful experience teaching undergraduate writing.
  • Demonstrated expertise using diverse rhetorics and / or anti-racist, decolonial pedagogy as lenses for teaching undergraduate writing.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching first-year writing and other undergraduate writing courses

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and / or background in teaching courses in one or more of the following : professional, science, or technical writing.
  • Decolonial and / or anti-racist studies; public and / or community writing; disability studies.
  • Experience and / or interest in innovative student outreach, faculty development, and community-engaged writing studies work.
  • Experience teaching multilingual learners.

Faculty have considerable autonomy in course design and program contributions within a culture of shared governance. Teaching primarily in the required first-year writing sequence, with opportunities for special sections, courses for the minor, and other common curriculum courses.

In person modality required. Service and research are expected and supported for all teaching professors, and our faculty make important contributions in their fields, across campus, and in the community.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to sit or stand in front of a classroom for an extended period of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office / campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 am - 4 : 30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas.

The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

This position will work in person on the University of Denver campus.

Salary Grade Number :

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range :

The salary range for this position is $46,660 - $65,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
