At Houston Methodist the Charge Nurse IIOperating Room (OR) Department Premium position is a licensedprofessional Registered Nurse (RN) who as an experienced clinicianfunctions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benners model ofclinical practice.

This position coordinates interdepartmentalcommunication with all those involved in the care delivered to ourdiverse patient population (i.

e. Anesthesia Board Runner SterileProcessing staff Preop PACU Bed Control Perfusionists ICUMonitoring and Cell Savers) as well as creates an environment forthe management and delivery of safe patient care.

In addition tofulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a clinical nurse theCharge Nurse II OR Department Premium position is a role model andassists in coaching and mentoring department staff in areas ofclinical and professional practice.

Role modeling compassionatecommunication with physicians and the interprofessional health careteam the Charge Nurse II OR Department Premium position assumesleadership responsibilities with high level contributions in theunit service line and across the institution.

Responsibilities forthis position may include but are not limited to leading unit andshared governance activities assessing unit needs related topractice and improvement opportunities serving as a clinicalresource for both unit and hospital staff and coordinating unit andhospitalwide education in partnership with management.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Accurately andclearly communicates information regarding the OR schedule andstaffing resource needs. Reviews next day OR schedule and workswith the management team to make room assignments based on skilland knowledge.

Communicates with staff concerning changes in theirassignment taking into consideration staff competency. Reassignsstaff to another room as appropriate directly informing staff ortheir manager.

Ensuresstudents new medical students residents and visitors etc. have beenappropriately processed / credentialed accordingly.

Maintainsconstant awareness that observers and visitors do not scrubescalating issues as theyarise.

Fosters staffengagement by demonstrating active listening requesting andacknowledging feedback making equitable decisions providingrationale when appropriate and supporting organizational goals.

Anticipates the needs of the staff members and proactively offersassistance. Role models interprofessional communication whichincludes active listening and teaching and assists with staffstress management as needed.

Improves department scores foremployeeengagement.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leadsthe patient and familycentered care standards as outlined in theHouston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Practicesin a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples. Proactively recognizes determines a plan of action andresponds to situations such as emergencycodes.

Coordinatesactivities that align the surgeon and their schedule for efficiencyand effectiveness by going to rooms and communicating with thesurgeon and staff assigned as to the projection for time to sendfor the next patient.

Communicates and discusses information withAnesthesia board runner and staff assigned to tofollowcase.

  • Confers with theLead in Sterile Processing / Materials Management to ensure all casesare pulled and all equipment instrumentation and supplies areavailable for scheduled cases and any appropriate resources areready for use.
  • Maintainsongoing interactions with entire care team and patients andfamilies as appropriate throughout the perioperative experience onimprovement of patient care through consistent rounding as needed.

Drives department service standards and activities to improvedepartment score for patient satisfaction through role modeling andfosteringaccountability.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Modelsthe standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document byactively participating in continuous improvement environmentinitiatives to improve quality and safety scores on the unit andhospital scorecards through peertopeer accountability usingteachable moments reporting near misses and identifying solutionsby collaborating with the interprofessional team promotingsituationalawareness.
  • Coordinates ORflow throughout the shift considering staff skill level and safetyto ensure that duty to patients can be met.

Reviews surgeryschedule the day prior and at the beginning of the shift delegatingappropriately with Sterile Processing Department (SPD) team.

Informs staff anesthesia and surgeon of anyissues.

Facilitatesseamless patient flow to / from / through the department by providingan accurate report to oncoming OR Charge Nurse or upcoming oncallstaff ensuring all emergency addon cases are posted on the scheduleanticipating any changes to schedule communicating to OR staff andto all involved department.

Role models the standards related toregulatory requirements and professional practice as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practicedocument.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Reviews the ORschedule on a regular ongoing basis with Anesthesia board runnerand interprofessional health care team determining roomavailability to maximize productive use of operatingrooms.
  • Ensures staff havechecked their rooms and removed what is not needed and thatrestocking has occurred. Holds assigned staff accountable forrestocking.

Oversees shift by shift resource utilization throughthe allocation of staff supplies and contributions to the patientthroughput.

Implementsdepartment strategies to achieve financial target and encouragesothers to do the same through timely documentation of careoptimizing efficiency minimizing incidental overtime and otherareas according to departmentspecifications.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Encouragesidentification and implementation of innovative solutions forpractice changes to improve patient care or unit operations such asreduction of hospital readmissions or other departmentspecificmeasures by leading and / or participating in unit projects andshared governance activities.

Incorporates evidencebased practiceswhich are presented to shared governance and leadership. Supportschange initiatives and adapts to unexpectedchanges.

Identifies andassumes responsibility of own learning needs and seeks continuingeducation opportunities to meet those needs.

Develops anddisseminates as appropriate informational / educational resources andprograms designed to improve quality and professional practiceCompletes and updates the My Development Plan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION

Bachelorsdegree or higher from an accredited school ofNursing

WORKEXPERIENCE

Two yearsoperating room nursing experience with demonstration of progressiveleadership skills

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • RN Registered NurseTexas State Licensure and / or Compact State Licensure within 60 days OR
  • RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
  • BLS Basic Life Support(AHA) AND
  • ACLS AdvancedCardiac Life Support (AHA) as defined by unit / service line AND
  • PALS Pediatric AdvancedLife Support (AHA) as defined by unit / service line OR
  • NRP NeonatalResuscitation as defined by unit / service line AND
  • CNOR Certified OperatingRoom Nurse (CCI) through National Commission for CertifyingAgencies (NCCA) or American Board for Specialty NursingCertification (ABSNC) within 6 months
