UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager to provide managerial and clinical leadership for our Electrophysiology team to assure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods and resources to accomplish performance objectives.

Being a Nurse in the Heart and Vascular Center

Position Responsibilities

  • Identify trends and determine QA priorities. Develop quality standards.
  • Work with leadership to appropriately allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectation.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop, implement and monitor plan to enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Formulate, review, and revise policies and other standards of professional practice essential for optimum delivery of patient service;

assures compliance with established standards of care (practice and performance).

  • Maintain knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations within unit by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
  • Understand the issues related to the decision-making process; analyze situations fully and accurately and reach productive decisions.
  • As needed ability to work outside of standard business hours to ensure all clinical and / or operational needs can be met.
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams within the unit.
  • Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care within the unit.
  • Ensure appropriate staff schedules, assign and perform Charge assignments.
  • Provide direct patient care in unit as needed.
  • Interpret, communicate, implement and monitor goals and objectives articulated in the institutional, departmental and / or divisional strategic plan.
  • Function innovatively and look beyond current reality to forecast future direction, take risks, challenge traditional assumptions and solve problems creatively.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop action plans for the unit that meet strategic goals; provide progress reports to leadership.
  • Communicate with physicians, staff, and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the clinical outpatient unit;

communicate with patients, families and staff to address and resolve issues.

  • Design innovative models of care utilizing skills of the multidisciplinary team yielding efficient and effective outcomes.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in the clinical problem identification and resolution processes; utilize human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to the Associate Clinical Director.
  • Build and sustain relationships, resolve conflict, handle negotiation effectively, and develop collaborative working relationships.
  • Ensure and provide clinical education to develop staff competency.
  • Oversee clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions. Collaborate effectively with the HVC Clinical or Nursing Practice Leader (CPL / NPL) or Department of Nursing educational leaders (in the absence of unit CPL / NPL).
  • Ensure staff compliances are applicable and complete by required deadline(s).
  • In collaboration with the HVC Human Resources Manager and HVC leadership, hire, develop and manage the performance of staff within the unit.
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions of the collective bargaining agreements and the Employee Manual for Staff Nurses & Allied Health Professionals (SNAHP);

assure staff are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Understand and oversee the daily management of ELMS for all staff, including but not limited to approvals / denials, scheduling, corrections, etc.
  • Apply organizational performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for unit.
  • Review with leadership financial reports and provide insights to budget variances; recommend budge ideas, resources and cost containment strategies.
  • Motivate staff to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of university resources.

Education Requirement

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.

Experience Requirement

  • Minimum one (1) year providing direct nursing care in related clinical setting / unit within past 6 months. Previous experience in a nursing leadership / supervisory position preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership / management and experience in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated history of positive and professional interactions with patients, families, professional health care staff, and interdisciplinary team members via written, verbal and in-person communication(s).
  • Demonstrates excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • As needed ability to work outside of standard business hours to ensure all clinical and / or operational needs can be met.

Certification / Licensure Requirement

  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required by start date.
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required by start date.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by start date.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified must seek certification in a role or specialty within (one) 1 year of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree (MSN, MBA, MHA).
  • Minimum three (3) years providing direct nursing care in related clinical setting / unit within past 6 months.
  • Previous experience serving in a Nurse Manager, Nursing Supervisor and / or Assistant Nurse Manager role.
  • Job-related certification.
