Job Description Summary

We are looking for an organized, motivated research specialist who can contribute to our work on RNA virus evolution and transmission.

The focus of our research group is using viral genomics data to understand how RNA viruses emerge in human populations and transmit between them.

We use a blend of approaches from classical virology experiments and deep sequencing, with computational approaches from population genetics and phylodynamics to investigate virus evolution.

The ideal candidate would have a background in biology or computational biology, and be detail-oriented, organized, willing to learn new skills, a strong problem-solver, and be willing and interested in performing a mix of benchwork and computational work.

Applicants with prior experience with viral cell culture, viral sequencing, bioinformatics, or coding in python are especially encouraged to apply.

Job Description

Responsibilities will include :

Placing and managing lab orders and inventory.

Performing molecular biology assays (PCR, RNA extraction, library preparation).

Contributing to computational tasks in the lab (coding scripts in python or R, curating and cleaning data).

Assisting senior personnel with cell culture assays using non-infectious virus components.

Communicating results via lab meeting presentations.

Working with others in a lab environment.

Must be self-motivated, capable of working independently without frequent, direct supervision, and able to follow verbal and written instructions.

This person must be able to work in a laboratory and interact with other lab members a professional manner. They must possess and use good interpersonal and public relations skills.

This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology / Bioinformatics, Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, or related field is preferred.
