Assistant Controller - Construction

Location : Orlando, FL

Compensation : $100,000

A well-established and nationally recognized construction and development company with over 40 years of success is seeking an Assistant Controller to join its finance team. Position Overview

The Assistant Controller is a key member of the accounting leadership team, responsible for supporting day-to-day financial operations, overseeing accurate reporting, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and industry regulations. The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting experience, thrives in a dynamic environment, and has the technical and leadership skills to partner across divisions including accounting, construction, and land development.

Key Responsibilities

Budgeting & Forecasting

Assist in preparing and consolidating annual budgets, forecasts, and divisional cash flow projections.

Monitor budget-to-actual variances, identify cost drivers, and provide recommendations for efficiency.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

Lead journal entries, reconciliations, and accrual processes to ensure accuracy.

Analyze revenue, expenses, margins, and profitability across jobs and communities.

Support audits, tax compliance, and lender reporting.

Job Cost Management

Oversee WIP schedules, job cost tracking, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.

Partner with operations and purchasing teams to ensure accurate cost allocation and vendor billing.

Monitor budgets vs. actuals and provide variance explanations to leadership.

Land & Development Accounting

Track and capitalize land acquisition and development costs.

Maintain schedules for land inventory, lot takedowns, and financing arrangements.

Support feasibility studies and pro forma analysis for new projects.

Treasury & Cash Management

Assist in monitoring daily cash balances, disbursements, and funding requirements.

Support wire transfers and banking transactions.

Process Improvement & Systems

Recommend and implement workflow enhancements to increase efficiency.

Help optimize accounting systems such as Sage Timberline or other ERP platforms.

Train staff on accounting best practices and support cross-functional projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

CPA or progress toward CPA preferred.

Public accounting experience a plus.

4+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in construction or real estate.

Solid knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles.

Experience with Sage Timberline or other ERP systems strongly preferred.

Advanced Excel skills; data analysis experience required.

Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
