Essential Functions :
Develops, enhances, and implements a comprehensive claims strategy aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives
Directs, oversees, and provides strategic leadership for all of the company’s claims operations and is accountable for attainment of the company’s claims goals and objectives
Develops and deploys enterprise-wide strategic plans for all claims handling functions, including long term strategy and short term tactical goals for the department
Responsible for the company’s handling of all claims in a manner that complies with state and federal laws and avoids bad faith exposures
Sets the company’s claims reserve philosophy, maintains a consistent EMC claims reserving process, and ensures adequate claims reserve levels
Determines the standards for the claim audit program and the schedule of claim audits
Ensures the development of technical trainings enable claims team members to perform at the highest level
Develops and implements a talent strategy across the portfolio of functions to achieve goals.
Supports and empowers people leaders and team members to accomplish objectives and to advance the multiyear strategies and annual priorities, goals, and action plans
Partners with various corporate office departments to ensure that the claims function supports the overall strategic direction of the company
Directs and oversees multiple business initiatives and operational strategies in support of the company's corporate annual and multi-year strategic plans
Develops and oversees practices and procedures for the claims departments to collaborate with underwriting and loss control to improve their efficiency and effectiveness
Promotes and delivers a continuous improvement claims culture that can deliver a superior customer experience, while mitigating loss and loss adjusting expenses
Ensures that the budget for the department is set at a level that balances efficiency, effectiveness, and service levels
Maintains awareness of changes in the law or culture that may impact claims handling or reserving practices, and anticipates solutions to emerging risks
Fosters an environment of collaboration within the team and with other teams and profit centers.
Collaborates with IT on the evaluation of claim technology solutions and, when needed, the implementation of that technology
Keeps abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices related to claims management to streamline processes and enhance the claims experience for customers
Ensures the effective introduction and integration of data analytics and reporting tools across Claims to identify trends, monitor claims performance, and make data-driven decisions
Develops and maintains external relationships with customer constituents, professional organizations, reinsurers, intermediaries, rating organizations, and others
Collaborates with external vendors to enhance claims handling efficiency and reduce costs while maintaining service quality
Identifies potential strategic partners and alliances and builds strong relationships to expand core product lines or to bring new product lines to the organization
Stays abreast of evolving laws, regulations, and industry guidelines impacting claims handling. Ensures the claims department is in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements
Leads the development and enforcement of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements
Education and Experience :
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a business or insurance related field
Juris Doctorate with bar admission in at least one state preferred
Ten years of claims leadership experience in a property and casualty insurance company
Insurance-related professional designations preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities :
Superior knowledge of the theory and practice of the claim function
Excellent understanding of insurance contracts
Advanced knowledge of the national trends in insurance law
Advanced knowledge of insurance contracts, medical terminology, and legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all lines of insurance
Excellent leadership qualities with the ability to motivate teams
Strong knowledge of claims systems
Ability to explore new and different processes, services, technologies, and partnerships to enhance EMC’s business
Exceptional knowledge of strategic planning and company products and services
Sets the direction and leads activities on multiple projects across departments
Ability to develop and / or execute strategic initiatives
Advanced analytical, investigative, and problem solving abilities
Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal skills
Travel required; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards will be required if driving
