About being our Biologist - Assistant Project Manager

This position would primarily support work generated by our Environmental Planning group based out of the Riverside office, but may also support other Psomas offices as needed.

As an Assistant Project Manager / Biologist at Psomas, this position would be overseen by a Senior Project Manager or Biological Resources Manager within our Resource Management Team.

This position will be a mix of office work and fieldwork, as determined by the career interests of the individual filling the position.

As the position would support the Riverside, CA office, it is expected to be based in our Riverside, CA office location;

however, the office location could also be based out of our Santa Ana, Los Angeles or Pasadena, CA office locations. The Biologist - Assistant Project Manager would be expected to perform project biological studies and other varied industry duties, such as preparing proposals, scheduling / overseeing preparation of biological studies, report writing, and other varied industry duties.

Responsibility Highlights for our Biologist - Assistant Project Manager

  • Manage projects under the supervision of a Senior Project Manager, including coordinating activities, conducting / overseeing biological studies, report writing, resource agency consultation, and assisting with other varied industry duties
  • Knowledgeable in the identification of biological resources of Southern California
  • Familiarity with current species protocols, regulatory requirements, and processes
  • Conduct biological surveys, such as general plant and wildlife surveys, vegetation mapping, nesting bird surveys, tree surveys, restoration monitoring
  • Conduct pre-construction surveys and biological monitoring
  • Prepare scopes of work, schedules, and budgets for letter proposals
  • Provide supporting information to marketing for larger proposal efforts
  • Schedule / coordinate field studies, including managing biological staff and subconsultants as needed
  • Review technical reports for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness
  • Coordinate with support staff (GIS, editing, word processing)
  • Prepare a variety of report types (Biological Constraints Reports, Biological Technical Reports, Biological Resources sections of CEQA documents, Focused Survey Reports, etc.)
  • Prepare invoices, approve subconsultant invoices, and track project financials to stay within assigned project budgets
  • Track tasks to ensure they are completed within the assigned schedule
  • Attend meetings (in person and online), including potentially leading meetings as needed
  • Interact with biological staff, subconsultants, and technical leads from other disciplines as needed
  • Interact with clients and resource agency personnel (with supporting direction from Senior Project Manager as needed)
  • Successfully delegate workload to staff and subconsultants based on expertise and availability
  • Mentor junior staff (informally)
  • Participate in professional organization(s) appropriate to technical expertise and / or business development
  • Develop a list of client contacts for repeat business

Minimum Qualifications for our Biologist - Assistant Project Manager

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Botany, Wildlife Biology, or related environmental technical discipline
  • Minimum of 4 years experience as a Biologist
  • Working knowledge of common plant species, special status plant and wildlife species in California (optimally the inland Southern California region)
  • Working knowledge of various survey guidelines, vegetation mapping and classification, and most common wildlife that rely on common habitat types in California (optimally the inland Southern California region)
  • Working knowledge of federal and state Endangered Species Acts, State Fish and Game Codes, and NEPA / CEQA; familiarity with Clean Water Act
  • 10a permit for California gnatcatcher is a plus
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Prior experience as a biologist, optimally at a consulting firm or resource agency
  • Interest in obtaining expertise / permits to conduct specialized focused surveys
  • Driving experience in offroad conditions, including potentially remote, rugged, and undeveloped terrain
  • Ability to conduct field work for long days, as needed
  • Physically fit to navigate potentially rugged conditions on foot while carrying supplies

A competitive salary! The expected range for this position is $70,000 - $85,000 / salary depending on experience
