About The Position
Job Title : Registered Nurse (RN) Job Specialty : Thoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Job Duration : 13 weeks Shift : 12-Hour Days Guaranteed Hours : 36 hours per week Experience : Minimum of 2 years License : Required to submit Certifications : ACLS, BLS, NIHSS preferred Must-Have : - Early recognition of changes in patient condition - Clear communication and escalation with providers - Critical thinking skills - Experience with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) preferred - Hemodynamic monitoring proficiency - Knowledge of chest tubes, ventilators, and various drains / surgical sites Job Description : The unit caters to ICU patients for Thoracic Surgery and overflow General Surgery ICU.
- Candidates need CRRT / SLED training on NxStage system; experience with PA catheters / hemodynamics, spinal drain management preferred.
- General ICU skill competency is required for an advanced academic medical setting.- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 2 or 1 : 3, depending on downgrade / acuity / emergency admission.
- Common diagnoses / types of patients include mesothelioma, thoracic aortic dissection, esophagectomy, lung decortications, and SICU overflow with various general surgery cases.
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as vasopressin, epinephrine, levophed, heparin, dobutamine, dopamine, versed, hydromorphone, fentanyl, ketamine, nimbex, esmolol, and cardene.
- A charge nurse is on each shift; preference for free charge but depends on staffing.- Nurse aides / patient care techs are available intermittently, depending on the census, with a ratio of 1 : 12 when present.
- Hospitalist and / or Intensivists are in-house 24 / 7, with intensivists on the unit during days and / or nights.- Respiratory therapists (RTs) are present in the ICU 24 / 7.
- RNs are required to read their own strips; tele monitors are by Phillips.- Self-scheduling is allowed within reason with balancing done by management.
- Weekend requirement is 4-6 days every 6 weeks, depending on coverage.- Floating is required within hospital ICUs, depending on skill set.
- Dress code requires teal bottoms and black or printed coordinating scrub tops; professional and identifiable as nursing staff.
- Orientation involves 2 shifts of unit / department-specific orientation.- Charting is done through Epic Systems Corporation - EpicCare Inpatient - EMR Core EMR 2010.
