We are looking for a workforce and supply chain research scientist to advance an analytic research program to inform innovative technical and policy solutions for the global workforce.
As a research scientist, you will work closely with students and faculty in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon and elsewhere within Carnegie Mellon and across the country to inform national strategy related to innovation, security, and supply chain management in workforce, including quantifying how decisions may impact national missions in security, economy, and societal well-being.
The research scientist should have demonstrated expertise relevant to the study of skill demand and supply or other workforce behavior, with a disciplinary connection to labor economics, production engineering or other workforce-related field, experience co-advising or managing students, working in interdisciplinary environments, and leveraging a wide range of empirics and modeling techniques to conduct research on real-world technology policy problems in the workforce.
The ideal candidate would have experience overseeing a research portfolio, raising money for research, managing relationships with internal and external partners, and in conducting research to inform government policy.
The candidate would have a Ph.D. in science, engineering, or computer science, and analytics experience within industry or government.
The candidate should also have demonstrated skills in working across disciplines.
Core Responsibilities :
- Conduct research to inform policy on workforce technology, supply chain, and infrastructure strategies that realize its multiple objectives (national security, economic prosperity, and social welfare objectives).
- Conduct integrative research with other CMU researchers and researchers at affiliated institutions.
- Co-advising students.
- Participating in the broader scientific community, including mentoring colleagues and representing the center and / or specific projects at conferences, consortia meetings and other events.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :
- Master’s Degree required. PhD in engineering, science, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience; ideally engaging with a mix of industry, academia and government focused on workforce and supply chain management issues.
- Experience with multiple institutional settings and a familiarity with ongoing policy and technology challenges facing the global workforce industry.
- Experience raising money (including federal and foundation grant-writing and industry partners), research experience, an interest in research to inform government practice, and experience with relationship management with internal and external partners.
- Real-world technology policy experience both in industry and government and also have demonstrated skills in working across a wide variety of people and in relationship building and have a start-up attitude where no task is too little or too big.
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
