Major Responsibilities :
Genetic APNs specialize in researching, consults, testing, interpreting, and educating patients on their genetic predispositions toward cancer.
Job functions include :
- Research- utilizing the latest literature on genetics, collecting data, and participating in research trials
- Consultation- Take a family History- obtain a detailed family history, construct a pedigree (Family history diagram)
- Based on analysis, conduct a risk assessment and analysis - Evaluating a patient’s risk of disease, hereditary and non-hereditary disease risk factors.
Identify potential genetic conditions or genetic predisposition to disease. Identify, manage and treat based on guidelines.
Make appropriate referrals to specialists.
- Recommend and order specific genetic testing based on risk analysis
- Based on test results, interpret, and recommend treatment or other courses of action. Interpret test and laboratory results accurately to make the best recommendations for patients utilizing national guidelines.
Provide genetic information and psychosocial support to individuals and families
- Provide Follow up nursing care for patients at risk for or affected by diseases with a genetic component standards.
- Prevention, advising patients on follow up plan, disease prevention, behavior modifications, lifestyle changes, educating on genetic results, providing medical / surgical management options based on NCCN guidelines and literature
Licenses & Certifications
- Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the caregiver practices, and
- Nurse Practitioner (ANCC) certification issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or
- Nurse Practitioner (AANP) certification issued by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration, and
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA). May obtain within 6 months based on department discretion.
Degrees
- Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant.
- Master's Degree in Nursing
Required Functional Experience
Must have oncology and cancer genetics background
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required :
- Demonstrated high level of clinical proficiency, and excellent decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective member of a health care team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with and establish / build relationships with others.
- Proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and twist continuously throughout the workday.
- Must have functional speech, vision, touch, and hearing.
- Must be able to :
- lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
- lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
- carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to :
- push / pull with 30 lbs of force.
- perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
- Will be exposed to the following hazards : mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation as well as blood and body fluids;
therefore, protective clothing and equipment (i.e., goggles, lead apron, gloves, gowns, etc.) must be worn as necessary.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
