In a Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) setting, Direct Support Professionals work collaboratively to empower people to reach their goals and live independently.

The core responsibility of this position is to fulfill an individual's behavioral care plan by creatively strategizing and implementing the best ways for each person to reach and exceed their goals. This involves teaching individuals how to accomplish their objectives, using behavioral strategies to support their success, motivating and encouraging participation in their care plans, and displaying understanding when applying rights-restrictions as determined by the interdisciplinary team.
Additional responsibilities include providing complete, consistent, and accurate documentation of an individual's progress, creating safe environments, and instructing on practices that promote goal achievement. The Direct Support Professional also advocates for individuals to have control over their lives, treating them with respect and empowering them to live independently.
