Job Description

Graduate Student Advisor

The Graduate Student Advisor functions as an integral part of the Lynch School of Education and Human Development (LSOEHD) graduate student support team.

As students have questions or needs, the advisor ushers the student through the problem-solving process, ensuring the experience is barrier-free.

As a member of the students support team, the Graduate Student Advisor works with students across programs to proactively create 1 : 1 relationships and foster an immediate sense of belonging, helping students feel as though they matter to the university community.

The Graduate Student Advisor assists matriculated students in navigating their program, building relationships with their faculty advisor, department, and instructors and supports students across various segments (i.

e., students on academic probation, students in the cohort specific and online programs, students needing specific academic support in time management, organization, etc.

The Graduate Student Advisor supports LSOEHD broadly by supporting efforts related to student retention, data reporting, student tracking and other University and school wide initiatives.

The Graduate Student Advisor will establish and maintain a collaborative and cooperative relationship with the larger university partners, central student services, faculty, and the wider college community.

This position reports to the Director, Online Programs & Graduate Student Services and will be assigned a caseload of students from the graduate student population, depending on student needs in a given semester.

Salary Range : $63,800 to $79,750; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Masters degree, preferably in higher education or counseling
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • Supervision of student staff in a team environment
  • Superior customer service orientation and focus and the ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team environment
  • Advisement and academic counseling skills
  • Ability to work with varying constituencies including faculty, staff, and students
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Boston College systems is preferred
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Excel, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrable problem-solving skills
  • Ability to provide functional supervision as needed and serve as a technical resource
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and manage changes to existing systems and implementation of new services
  • Ability to maintain data security and confidentiality of all data at all times
  • Ability to work with others under pressure in order to meet deadlines
