CLASS DESCRIPTION
The Network Cabling Technician provides connectivity support for the full range of hardware within the functions of computer networking environment.
The Network Cabling Technician generally serves as the initial point of contact for Layer 1 troubleshooting issues and concerns.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with unshielded twisted pair, single- and multi-mode fiber optic, coaxial cable, CAT 5 / 6 or equivalent.
- Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot problems, maintain lines, or repair cable. (Equipment such as analog and digital voltmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, breakout boxes, cable scanners, LAN meters, portable sniffers, fiber-optic light source and power meter, laptop computers using ip / ipx protocols, and electronic circuitry, copper and fiber optic cable, or equivalent may be used.)
- Plan, install, maintain, and relocate network hardware. (Hardware such as Cisco routers and switches, shared Ethernet hubs, transceivers, Network Sniffers, and other equivalent network monitoring equipment.)
- Manufacture and provide patch cords, maintain and troubleshoot outside plant intra building cabling, or equivalent, or oversee contractors.
- Troubleshoot complaints.
- Monitor, inspect and approve the work of contractors.
- Certify data wiring and monitor, inspect, and conduct all tests required, ensuring all system component connections are operating properly.
Equipment such as to CAT 3 and CAT 5 for compliance with Ethernet and Fast Ethernet standards, and other comparable equipment.)
- Undertakes the loading and installation of workstations, laptops, and peripherals
- Undertakes the installation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.
- Provides documentation of all information on all cable and equipment
- Improves upon existing installation and troubleshooting procedures
- Directs unresolved issues to the next level of support personnel
- Records events and problems and their resolution in a log system
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION : High School Degree or equivalent required; Associate Degree and / or related Technical Degree preferred.
CompTIA A+ or equivalent preferred.
EXPERIENCE : At least two (2) years of work experience in a large organization (>
2,000 users / customers). Demonstrated ability to resolve technical issues, effectively communicate orally and in writing, and display a positive customer service attitude.

- Tech savvy with working knowledge of office automation products, printing, databases, remote access and security applications.
