Assistant Director of Finance

The Krieger School of Arts & Sciences is seeking an . The Assistant Director of Finance is responsible for financial modeling, financial analysis and financial planning of Advanced Academic Programs, the Office of Summer and Intersession Programs (OSIP) and new masters degree programs.

The overall budget exceeds $150M. This position is also responsible for management of gift and endowment accounts across the school as well as internal financial memoranda of understanding.

Additionally, this person would serve as the financial liaison to administrative units within the deans office. Collaborates with stakeholders on short and long-range planning to improve financial effectiveness to ensure financial targets are met.

Serves as a key member of the KSAS Divisional Business Office Team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage funds of various types at both strategic and detailed / analytical levels, e.g. general funds, tuition, gift, endowment, whose total revenues exceed $150M.
  • Responsible for the development of budgets, allocations and process implementation; including preparation and presentation of annual enrollment and expense projections in collaboration with leadership and finance staff.
  • Track actuals to ensure targets are being met and take corrective actions as needed.
  • Oversee revenue sharing calculations, transactions between departments / divisions.
  • Responsible for monitoring and overall analysis of budget patterns, expenditures, and revenue on a monthly, quarterly and ad hoc basis.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee the continued improvement of financial systems and processes.
  • Develop complex financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
  • Develop management, narrative, and statistical reports.
  • Work with leadership to develop business plans for new programs.
  • Use SAP and Analysis reporting modules in an efficient and effective manner to respond to internal and external inquiries.
  • Works closely with management to develop cost effective delivery systems for academic programs, to manage finances, and to ensure effective reporting.
  • Reviews and maintains files of internal and external MOUs.
  • Participates in the fiscal year end closing process which includes deferral / accrual of income and expenses.
  • Participate in the process of strategic financial planning with senior management.
  • Formulate and document overall planning for projects, new services, and initiatives which incorporates growth, viability, profitability, and fosters the continued advancement of the schools mission.
  • Oversee expansion of revenue and corresponding expense growth including.
  • detailed business plans to include market demand assessment, capital needs, facilities, strengths and weaknesses, operational requirements, and implementation plans.
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that required policies and procedures are followed.
  • Analyzes financial data to ensure efficient use of resources, and to project future expenditures.
  • Reviews costs and performs cost benefit analysis on all programs and identifies budget issues and provides fiscally responsible solutions.
  • Oversee the set-up of, monitor and manage Gifts and Endowments in coordination with the Development Office, including, Stewardship oversight to ensure fellowships and other gifts / endowments conform to donors directives, monitoring of principal and payout accounts, reporting and forecasting.
  • Work with rest of KSAS Divisional Business Office Team to provide backup support to Departments / Centers as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and quantitative skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of higher education environment and university, state & federal regulations.
  • Experience in systems implementation a plus.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Knowledge of JHU & KSAS policies and procedures.
  • Proven track record of exercising sound, independent judgment in decision making.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with ability to prioritize multiple and changing responsibilities.
  • Able to identify short and long-term problems, strengths and weaknesses of current practices, alternatives, and implement creative solutions to address complicated issues.
  • Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with SAP preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter, takes initiative, pro-active.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Healthcare management or related field.
  • Seven years progressively responsible professional-level administrative and financial experience related to monetary or non-monetary resources.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or Masters Degree in related field.
  • Experience using SAP, Excel, Tableau, JHU student information system, Oracle EPM.
  • Experience working on complex budgets.

Total Rewards

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins Universitys salary range for this position.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education / training and other qualifications.

Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines : JHU Equivalency Formula : 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education / experience required for the respective job.
