Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business.

We are looking to fill the critical role of Senior Civil Engineer who will serve as a Civil Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data center programming, design development, construction administration, renovations, retrofits, master planning, site due diligence, and operations-related technical design guidance and support.
This role is located in hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX, or Phoenix, AZ. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.
This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 50%.
Responsibilities
The Senior Civil Engineer will provide civil engineering technical direction and oversight for AMERS-region data center designs and will engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external A / E consultant teams and general contractors that specialize in data center designs and builds to ensure that Microsoft’s data center civil engineering and site infrastructure design and quality standards are met.
The successful candidate will provide civil engineering technical direction, oversight, and design and construction review for new data center campus designs, builds, leases, retrofits, and renovations in addition to technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning, and permitting.
Core Responsibilities :
- Collaborate with internal Microsoft and external stakeholders to provide civil engineering technical direction to deliver projects aligned with defined civil engineering, site, and infrastructure design and performance criteria within scope, schedule, and budget.
- Possess exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Civil engineering, site, utility and infrastructure design proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on mission-critical data center campus design.
- Work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment in a results-oriented collaborative manner.
- Demonstrate integrity and be methodical and detail-oriented.
Qualifications
Required / Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years of technical Civil Engineering design experience.
- OR Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 5+ years of technical civil engineering design experience.
- OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
- OR Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineering License in Civil Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience participating on civil engineering design teams for large scale critical facilities and infrastructure development projects with multi-disciplinary teams of architects and engineers.
- 5+ years' of experience in navigating in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Sketchup, Bluebeam, BIM 360, and Autodesk Construction Cloud software for drawing review and development of conceptual level master plans during site selection and early design phases.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire / transfer and every two years thereafter.
Citizenship & Citizenship Verification : This position requires verification of U.S citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions.
To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport, or other approved documents, or verified US government clearance.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of technical Civil Engineering design experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 8+ years of technical civil engineering design experience.
- OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience.
- OR Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
- Experience working in mission critical environments and knowledge on land acquisition, site master planning, permitting, and development.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally.
- Business level fluency to read, write and speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French.
