Tech Director

Position Summary

The Tech Director role is a professional who guides and encourages a group of people, and typically manages a department or group.

The Tech Director role provides guidance and leads a group of Managers and team members in a particular area of an organization.

A Tech Director will typically drive budgetary and strategic decisions for a department, working closely with the Vice President to ensure enterprise alignment.

Some common responsibilities for the Tech Director role include defining or shaping guidelines, policies, and procedures to be used across the Technology organization, planning and coordinating Technology-wide efforts (projects, programs, and cross-team efforts), and evaluating and developing strategies.

The Tech Director is a senior-level management position.

About The Team

Reporting to the Vice President of Enterprise Technology Operations, this senior level role is responsible for defining and supporting Clayton team members operational end user needs.

This includes responsible for the Service Desk, End User Support and Enterprise Technology Operations Portfolio Management.

This role will be involved in both operational support and project activities. The Director will encounter issues of high complexity as well as efforts that require in-depth knowledge across multiple technical areas and business lines.

The Director will operate within Enterprise Technology Operations (a division of Clayton Technology) but acts on behalf of the overall enterprise to drive maturity in the operational support of Clayton team members.

This role includes 3 direct reports and a broader team of 35 people.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensuring strategic alignment of activities at the Department level
  • Defining and implementing Strategic Tech Initiatives as defined through Tech Leadership activities (TechOps, Directors, Senior Leaders, and Tech Leadership Team)
  • Develop team morale across multiple departments through encouragement, coaching, and collaboration.
  • Serve as a chief communicator, particularly with team members reporting directly to you but also across multiple teams within or across departments.
  • Drive capacity planning activities to ensure the right roles are in the right place at the right time to ensure projects and broader programs succeed.
  • Implementing and executing projects, activities, tasks, and plans
  • Develop strategic roadmaps or tactical plans for upcoming work covering two to three years, with a focus on delivery in the near-term
  • Manage portions of budgets that are relevant to your department or team.
  • Setting goals for a team and monitoring progress
  • Fostering positive relationships with your team members, peers, and other teams that support or interact with your team.
  • Inspiring team members and motivating them to reach individual and team goals.
  • Providing feedback or performance reviews to encourage future growth, playing a key role in promotion decisions.
  • Celebrating team successes
  • Development of department budgets, and overseeing the budget for a team or department
  • Supporting the hiring, interviewing and training processes for Managers and Leads within the team
  • Using strategic planning to create business and productivity goals for your team, area, or department
  • Manage contractors and vendor relationships associated with contract labor

Primary Qualifications

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in the direct field of responsibility or similar experience
  • 5 to 7 years of previous management experience
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to develop plans and define tasks needed to complete projects or defined activities (e.g., upgrade a system; test a suite of releases; etc.)
