The Physician Assistant - Family Medicine is responsible for providing medical care as delegated by Physician and functioning within the plan of Standard Care Arrangement (SCA).

The PA works autonomously and in collaboration with the physicians to diagnose, treat and manage individuals or populations of patients.

PA can serve as health care resource providers, patient advocates and interdisciplinary consultants with the Health Care Team (HCT)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The Physician Assistant will have clinical responsibilities for assigned shifts and assigned patient populations based on credentialing and is responsible to their collaborating Physicians for clinical practice issues with the scope of practice to care, diagnose, treat, and manage individuals or populations of patients.
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical exams.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions in patients currently receiving treatment and in those that have finished treatment.

Develop treatment plans for patients within the Standard Care arrangement scope.

  • Assists physicians with medical management of patients including rounding on patients
  • Initiate, request and / or perform routine laboratory, radiologic and diagnostic studies as indicated. Identify normal and abnormal findings in patients treated and respond appropriately.
  • Evaluate the patient’s response to treatment and provides education and counseling as appropriate.
  • Document patient data in the medical record i.e., including progress notes, etc.
  • Monitor outcomes of patient response to treatment and overall outcome of patient care delivery; continuously making changes to enhance quality of care.
  • Develop and monitor the individualized plan of care
  • Coordinates the overall health care services with the HCT including communicating with patients / families.
  • Triages phone calls from outpatients, manages patient care problems and follows up on complex care concerns
  • Institutes and changes orders on patient charts per the SCA
  • Demonstrates competence of the practice outlined within the SCA using methods of quality care reviews, periodic peer review, clinical outcomes evaluation.
  • File SCA with the sponsoring physician and review and renew periodically. If requirements for prescriptive authority are met add appropriate drugs from the formulary to the plan as appropriate.
  • Maintains competency in performing clinical practice for patients in stages of the life cycle appropriate to specialty
  • Initiate / communicate discharge planning needs to patients / social workers in a timely manner
  • Values ethnic and cultural differences in the treatment and planning of care
  • Develop and provide education and support to the health care team of recent research and changes in practice relevant to their specialty.
  • Participate in the performance improvement and outcome management process with the hospital i.e., Practice guidelines, standards of practice and care, etc.
  • The PA will be in full compliance with Division protocols, policies, and procedures for the care of adult and / or pediatric patients, CMS, and JACHO standards
  • Practices within the national standards specific to specialty, for Physician Assistants and as identified in the Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code.
  • Collaborates with other departments on projects as appropriate and / or requested. Conducts / participates in divisional / institutional research as opportunities arise
  • Acts as a mentor / role model for staff as well as a resource person for nurses, medical assistants, and / or other ancillary staff.
  • Maintains professional standards of attendance, appearance, demeanor, and company values. Assumes responsibility and accountability of own actions, seeks out supervision as necessary
  • Promotes spirit of teamwork through effective communication, cooperation, and collaboration
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education : Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master’s degree in appropriate field
  • License and / or Certification :
  • State of Ohio Licensure-Physician Assistant
  • National Certification as a Physician Assistant
  • BLS Certified
  • COA from the Ohio State Medical Board to practice as a Physician Assistant
  • Eligible to obtain and / or maintain Certificate to Prescribe / DEA
  • Skills : Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Tolerate busy environment that requires constant interaction with patients, employees, students,
  • residents, and physicians.
  • Requires prolonged walking and standing. Occasional lifting of patients sometimes over 200 pounds.
  • Occasional carrying of items weighing up to 30 pounds required.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and manual dexterity.
  • Requires the ability to operate various types of office equipment, including but not limited to : Personal computer, fax machines, copiers, telephones
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and / or body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to work effectively both with internal and external customers in stressful situations.
