Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, and storm drains.
As a member of our 218 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps;
and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.
Within the Transportation Stormwater Maintenance Unit, your impact becomes even more crucial. Your work will directly impact the long-term performance and resilience of our stormwater system.
You will help maintain and repair 610 miles of pipes and culverts, 32,000 inlets, and 3,500 junctions. With 1,132 centerline miles of streets under your care, you'll be an instrumental part of a team dedicated to the sustainability and functionality of our stormwater assets and public waterways.

As you learn and develop in this role, you will learn and be responsible for operating a range of haul vehicles, including flat bed and dump trucks, as well as wide variety of construction equipment.
Through training and experience, your expertise will eventually extend to special function equipment, such as both automated and walk-behind leaf collection trucks, and snow and ice removal equipment.
As you engage in groundwork tasks, you will utilize manual and power tools to execute tasks such as cleaning catch basins and storm drains;
maintaining ditches, repairing and maintaining pipes; and contributing to general street maintenance activities. Additionally, you will learn adaptability by undertaking other assigned duties as required.
As your training continues, this position may involve working in confined spaces, including underground drainage structures.

Some reasonable goals for a successful equipment operator in their first year will be similar to those below :
At 3 Months : You will complete your basic Orientation and Safety Training, You will learn equipment-specific safety protocols, And if you do not already have your CDL license, you will have obtained your permit and be moving towards your license.
You will also be learning the basic functionalities of the assigned equipment and demonstrating the ability to perform pre-operation equipment checks.
Finally, you will learn to effectively communicate with team members and supervisors as well as understanding and following instructions from experienced operators.
At 6 Months : If you do not already have your CDL license, you will have completed and obtained your CDL license with all required endorsements.
You will learn to handle more complex tasks and scenarios with assigned equipment. You will gain the necessary experience to respond appropriately to unexpected challenges during operations.
You will increase the speed and efficiency of equipment operations. Finally, you will learn to accurately and efficiently document the equipment, labor, and materials utilized during maintenance activities.
At 9 Months : You will develop a deeper understanding of equipment capabilities and limitations. You will be working seamlessly with other team members, coordinating tasks efficiently.
At One Year : You will continue your own personal improvement and actively seek further training opportunities. You will be able to contribute ideas for process improvements to enhance overall efficiency.
Finally, you will participate in your annual performance reviews and feedback sessions with supervisors to help set your personal development goals for the following year.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates various types of heavy equipment
- Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Performs storm drain and catch basin cleaning and repairs.
- Performs pipe maintenance and repairs
- Operating automated or walk behind leaf machine for leaf collection
- Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and / or cleaning equipment
- Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
A willingness to listen, learn, and demonstrate continuous improvement on the job.
Licenses and Certifications :
- Valid North Carolina Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire (Class A preferred).
- May be required to obtain Tanker Endorsement
