Lab Technical Specialist, Corporate Office in Burlingame

We have an opening for a Lab Technical Specialist in our National Laboratory in our Corporate Headquarters. Garratt-Callahan, (www.

garrattcallahan.com), is a National Industrial Water Treatment Chemical Company since 1904. Our headquarters, and our state of the art national laboratory, are located in Burlingame, California near the San Francisco Airport.

The position is full time, M-F. The Lab Technical Specialist will assist the Lab Director and the QA Coordinator with administrative work needed to maintain the lab’s quality system and meet regulatory requirements for California ELAP TNI accreditation.

Duties include :

  • Audits lab SOPs against referenced methods, regulations and current lab practice and assists in conducting internal audits of the quality system and lab processes.
  • Assists in researching regulatory requirements for CA ELAP and TNI environmental laboratory accreditation.
  • Researches equipment, parts and supplies for purchase. Also researches new methods and the equipment, supply and facility requirements needed for them.
  • Contacts lab equipment and supply vendors for pricing, quotes and information and schedules meetings and demos as needed.
  • Finds and contacts outside laboratories needed by the laboratory or sales department and obtains quotes for the services.
  • Creates and maintains in-house and outside laboratory service items and prices in the AS400 accounting software system and price pages.
  • Assists in creating and documenting corrective action plans for assessments and audits and tracking progress on the corrective action tasks.
  • Assists the Lab Director and QA Coordinator in keeping track of lab goals and important deadlines, such as assessments, internal audits, ELAP applications, training, proficiency testing studies, calibrations and service contract renewals.
  • Assists in scheduling and tracking laboratory training, including data integrity training, and maintaining training records.
  • Assists in organizing the lab’s printed and electronic files for document control.
  • Assists in the maintenance and creation of tests, methods, quality control limits, and other records in the Sample Master LIMS.
  • Participates in meetings with lab staff, vendors and contractors (virtual and in-person).
  • Assists the Lab Director and QA Coordinator with other administrative, clerical, data entry, writing, and research tasks as needed.
  • Assists in scheduling and tracking laboratory training, including data integrity training, and maintaining training records.
  • Assists in organizing the lab’s printed and electronic files for document control.
  • Assists in the maintenance and creation of tests, methods, quality control limits, and other records in the Sample Master LIMS.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE :

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

A bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field is required. Analytical laboratory experience is preferred. Administrative or clerical experience is helpful.

Other fields and levels of experience may qualify at the discretion of the Laboratory Director.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Above average English language skills, both written and verbal, are necessary. Must be able to effectively communicate with people, using both technical and non-technical terminology.

MATHEMATICAL and / or COMPUTER SKILLS

Must be computer literate and understand, at minimum, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and e-mail software sufficient to be proficient.

Ability to perform basic math skills and algebra is necessary.

REASONING ABILITY

Excellent reasoning ability is necessary for this job. The employee must be able to understand and research lab analytical data, equipment, methods, and regulations.

P HYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must be able to sit for 8 hours a day and take phone calls. The employee must be capable of handling word processing tasks for over 4 hours per day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires that the employee handle multiple tasks at the same time and meet deadlines, without exception. The work environment is fast-paced and service-oriented, requiring the employee to meet the needs of the field representatives and customers in a pleasant and professional manner.

Responsiveness by phone, mail and / or e-mail to the needs of the sales department and customers are essential.

Salary range is $70,000 to $85,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
