JOB DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker is seeking a highly motivated Sr. Project Managerto support our growing bridge practice within Virginia. Candidates have the option of sitting in our Richmond VA or VA Beach office.

This is an exciting career opportunity to work on a growing transportation team with one of the preeminent national transportation engineering firms and the #4-ranked bridge practice in the U.

S., to focus on delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to VDOT and local governments. There is consideration of hybrid and remote work with this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Managing complex structural analysis, design, reports, plan production, specification, estimates, etc. for state and local clients.
  • Managing structure load ratings on conventional and complex bridges using hand calculations through finite element methods.
  • Manage staff developing structural details and construction plans using MicroStation or AutoCAD. MicroStation is the preferred platform.
  • Provide technical guidance on bridge design related items.
  • Implement and / or conduct QA / QC procedures of bridge / structure tasks and projects.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train other structural engineering staff with less experience.
  • Talent Management- directly supervises 2 to 5 employees.
  • Lead large-scale bridge projects with multiple disciplines and subconsultants.
  • Development of and adherence to scope, schedule, and budget for structure tasks
  • Confers with project staff to outline workplan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority; manages the resources of the project.

Establishes work plan and staffing for each phase of project.

  • Arrange, prepare, and conduct meetings both internally and externally.
  • Successfully interface with staff from a range of other disciplines (traffic, civil, planning, etc.) to support a diverse range of projects.
  • Prepare invoicing and complete billing for assigned projects.
  • Manages, maintains, and builds client relationships and increases market share in bridge engineering and associated service lines.
  • Lead client engagement and marketing activities. Establish and maintain relationships with fellow employees, clients, and other stakeholders.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with structural emphasis. Master's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structures is desired.
  • 20 + years of bridge design and analysis experience plus 5+ years as a project manager of multidiscipline bridge projects in VDOT design requirement policies is a must.
  • Professional engineer (PE) registration in Virginia or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience managing and delivering VDOT and municipal client projects. Ideal candidates will have also extensive experience with VDOT standards and procedures for bridge design, plan development, inspection and ratings.
  • Strong technical ability able to lead, perform, and check bridge and structure designs to ensure accuracy with design codes and client requirements.
  • Familiar with structural design software including VDOT Design Programs and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Midas Civil, AASHTO Ware Bridge Rating, STAAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite and other similar software tools.

Allplan, OpenBridge is a plus.

  • Strong all-around theoretical knowledge of structural engineering principles.
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively on all levels, internal and external.
  • Ability to apply effective use of project contingencies, both budgets and schedules.
  • Demonstrated intimate familiarity with client's requirements, challenges and key areas of interest for growth.
  • Ability to develop creative and innovative cost saving modifications to conventional designs through construction / value engineering opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to properly address and manage change.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, negotiations and decision-making skills.
  • Client management skills; demonstrated ability leading and managing the design and detailing of complex bridge projects, with an emphasis on experience and knowledge of structural infrastructures.
  • Desire to lead proposal efforts while leveraging established client and industry relationships to win work. Ability to support bridge and structure proposal development through strong technical writing.
  • Occasional to moderate travel may be required.
  • This position does not offer sponsorship.
  • Experience managing design-build projects is a plus.
  • Ideal candidates will have extensive experience with VDOT and VDOT design standards.

COMPENSATION

The approximate compensation range for this position is 115 to 190K. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.

Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
