Special Education Teacher (Washington DC)

The International Academy for the Brain (iBRAIN-Academy) is one of the largest brain-injury special education programs in the world.

iBRAIN-Academy’s mission is to research, develop, and implement special education and related services for school-aged (3 to 21 years of age) students, as well as the development of a fully-inclusive education model, predicated on our Common Planning and Clinical-Educational Grand Rounds Model.

iBRAIN-Academy is headquartered in New York City with current locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Washington, D.C. iBRAIN is expanding to add an out-patient clinic (iBRAIN-Center), as well as growing its research efforts for the brain injury and brain-based disorders community (iBRAIN-Institute).

Position Title : Special Education Teacher

Salary Range : $65,000-$90,000 (based on years of experience)

Reports to : Deputy Director of Special Education; Director of Special Education

Job Type : Full time (in person; no remote / hybrid)

Position Summary : The Special Education Teacher at iBRAIN-Academy, under the direction of the Deputy Director of Special Education and Director of Special Education, is a licensed professional and an integral part of the multidisciplinary team that serves iBRAIN-Academy students.

This individual provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, functions as the principal of the classroom, and evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives as it pertains to annual IEPs and quarterly progress reports.

The Special Education Teacher also participates as part of the multidisciplinary team in Clinical-Educational Grand Rounds.

Location(s) : Washington, D.C.; iBRAIN-Academy campus

Responsibilities :

  • Oversee a classroom of 6 to 8 school-aged children with brain injuries and / or brain-based disorders with a wide range of impairments
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary / inter-disciplinary team including each student’s therapy team of speech therapists, physical therapists, and teachers of the visually impaired
  • Communicate with parents as necessary and involve them in their child's activities and progress on a regular basis (e.g.

weekly calls, coordination of home services)

  • Provide direction and supervision to the teaching assistants and paraprofessionals in the classroom
  • Prepare and manage daily session notes on iBRAIN’s electronic database, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), quarterly progress reports, and weekly parent updates for each student
  • Participate in IEP meetings
  • Participate in research initiatives and quarterly Clinical-Educational Grand Rounds Presentations
  • Employ appropriate assessment tools / metrics to assess students, identify goals and measure progress
  • Utilize a multi-sensory approach incorporating art, music and technology to design lessons that increase students’ communication, social, academic, vocational, self-care and life skills
  • Prepare lesson plans and implement differentiated, direct Instruction to students both individually and in small groups
  • Maintain confidentiality for school records
  • Participate, as needed, in common planning meetings for assigned students
  • Identify at least 3 knowledge gaps and / or competency areas annually, and share them with the iBRAIN Postgraduate Continuing Education Program

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities 1-6, or Early Childhood and Students with Disabilities B-2, or Permanent Special Education Certification Required
  • Master’s degree in special education or related field required
  • A minimum of 2 years of classroom experience working with children with special needs / brain-based disorders preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal, problem solving, communication skills, along with the ability to take initiative, and a highly flexible personality type
  • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds independently
  • Must be detail-oriented, focused, highly motivated, and able to work as part of a team
