Job Description : Purpose :

Purpose :

Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Nurses, works collaboratively with other services and disciplines to plan, develop and evaluate comprehensive care for patients in the Emergency Department.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Demonstrates in depth knowledge of psychopathology in assessment and treatment of Adult and Pediatric patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of principles of management and supervision in planning Division activities and assisting ancillary staff to meet these on a day-to-day basis.
  • Participates in Division development / enhancement and solves problems using PI approach and serving on committees.
  • Uses appropriate labor relations principles and disciplinary procedures to counsel staff regarding problematic issues.
  • Assists in designing monitors for PI projects in the department, interprets results to staff for change in delivery of care.
  • Evaluates the operation of the Departments daily focusing on potential problems and providing solution including staffing, record keeping and communication with Director of Nursing (ED).
  • Works closely with Supervisors to interpret hospital mission / vision statements so staff can communicate these to patients / families.
  • Recognizes difficult behavior of patients, families, visitors interacting in a non-judgmental way to move toward a goal.
  • Pursues and successfully completes the Certification for Emergency Nursing (CEN).
  • Participates in Performance Improvement (PI), Joint Commission (JC) and other regulatory agency activities.
  • In collaboration with the director, plans and implement an orientation for new staff.
  • Assists in reviewing policies and procedures and rewrites and revises accordingly.
  • Participates in departmental human resources engagement and activities; initiates and completes labor management-related activities aligned with the organizational policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications :

1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.

2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity;

or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.

3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
