Job Overview
Under the clinical supervision of the Director of Addiction Medicine for Southern California, the Addiction Medicine Physician (AMP) is responsible for management of withdrawal, and the initiation, maintenance and support of Medically Assisted Treatment of alcohol and drug use disorders for HealthRIGHT 360 clients.
The physician is responsible for taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, using screening tools, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, and diagnosing and treating common illnesses and injuries.
They are responsible for collaborating with the Intake Department to assess safe entry into our detox and residential treatment programs for patients with substance use disorders.
Key Responsibilities
Skills & Medicine Responsibilities :
- Assesses drug and alcohol use and determines level of severity using screening tools and current DSM criteria.
- Determines medication withdrawal management for patients detoxing from drugs and alcohol to prevent withdrawal complications.
- Determines appropriate level of treatment care based on currently drug and alcohol use.
- Prescribes various Medical Assisted Treatments to reduce harm and prevent complications from drug and alcohol use.
- Educates and prescribes opioid reversal agents such as naloxone to patient to reduce harm from drug use.
- Educates, supports and cares for patients receiving medication assisted treatment in continuity and maintenance.
- Analyzes and interprets patient history, symptoms, physical findings, and / or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
- Maintains complete and detailed records of patients' history, assessment, and health care plans.
- Takes medical histories, performs physical examinations, orders and interprets laboratory tests, and diagnoses and treats common illnesses and injuries.
- Diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury related to addiction use disorder such as HIV PrEP, Hep C treatment, and other Incidental Medical Services.
- Consulting with the SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine for treatment or referral options.
- Collaboration with behavior health teams.
- Provide oversight for Advanced Practice Providers including entering into a Collaborative Agreement with the Advanced Practice Providers, providing supervision, having input in the clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review and hiring and termination of Physicians and clinical support staff.
- Provides clinical supervision to medical team members such as med techs, LPT, and nurses.
- May be required to attend leadership or clinical meetings.
- Oversee medication room management including performing routine audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
Reporting back to SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine regularly regarding findings.
Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education and Experience Required :
- M.D. or D. O. degree from accredited United States medical school.
- Successfully completed internship and residency at accredited United States Internship or Residency Program.
Certification / Licensure :
- Board Certified in any ACGME ABMS primary care specialty.
- Board Certified in subspecialty of addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry.
- Valid and active California medical license.
- Eligible to participate in the CMS Medicaid / Medicare reimbursement programs.
- Valid and active DEA license.
Desired :
- Clinical experience with and commitment to working with diverse client populations suffering from substance use disorder and addiction
- Bilingual in Spanish
Background Clearance Required :
Must not be on active parole or probation
Knowledge Required :
- Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications
- Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency
- Knowledge and respect of all confidentiality issues.
- Knowledge of and experience with providing culturally competent and trauma informed services
