Position Information :

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students (AVC / DOS), the Associate Dean of Students works closely with the AVC / DOS and Assistant Dean of Students to support student safety during protests, as well as engage students in educational activities focused on free speech and campus climate.

This role provides visionary and strategic leadership, develops long-range planning, and crafts a collective vision for the UCR identity centers collectively known as the Ethnic and Gender Centers.

The centers included are Foster Youth Support Services, African Student Programs, Asian Pacific Student Programs, Chicano Student Programs, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, Native American Student Programs, Middle Eastern Student Center, Undocumented Student Programs, and the Women's Resource Center in the Student Affairs Organization.

These centers and service areas play a central role in addressing diversity and inclusion for students through student support services, leadership development, facilitated discussions focused on world events, community involvement / outreach efforts, and cultural events.

The Associate Dean of Students will leverage their strong strategic planning background and abilities to lead planning at the organizational, cluster, and institutional levels.

The incumbent will work in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students and Dean of Students Managers team to create synergy across the Identity Centers, Student Life, Residential Life, Career Center, Health Wellness and Safety as well as Student Government (ASUCR) by co-programming and training of professional staff.

Collaboration with the AVC / Dean of Students to drive and support the mission of the Identity Centers and explore an array of equity frameworks to ensure that programming is in alignment with current student needs while incorporating contemporary approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion work.

Collaborate with the Director of Student Life and New Student Programs team to craft, implement, and assess the common ground initiative, and create synergies to incorporate partnerships that contribute to student success.

Provide support and maintain oversight of the Referendum Student Advisory Committee in collaboration with the committee chair, through planning and coordination of meetings and work with the AVC / DOS Executive Assistant to coordinate logistics and resources to support the progress of the committee.

Responsible for successfully managing complex personnel and budget matters in alignment with organizational and institutional policies and processes.

Requirements :

Educational Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Required
  • Advanced degree in related area. Preferred
  • Terminal Degree in Higher Education or related area. Preferred
  • Terminal degree such as a PhD or EdD with an emphasis on Student Affairs and Higher Education or similar background strongly preferred. Preferred

Experience Requirements :

  • 8 - 13 years of related experience. Required
  • Understanding of complex budgetary concepts and structures in higher education. Preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Preferred
  • Experience that reflects a strong understanding of the complex nature of first amendment and free speech in higher education as well as how to balance the role of a university agent while supporting students in their engagement in free speech and protest activities. Preferred
  • Experience with University of California policies and procedures. Preferred
  • Previous supervisory / managerial experience. Preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of directly related experience is strongly preferred. Preferred
  • Experience working with identity centers and within that functional area and supervising professional staff. Preferred

  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience in understanding Equity and Inter-sectional frameworks and how to actualize them in student affairs work and across Ethnic and Gender Center work.
  • Ability to navigate complex personnel issues and mediate workplace conflicts and address performance challenges in a fair consistent and neutral manner.

Navigate confidentiality successfully and work in alignment with HR policies and approaches.

Ability and skill to represent the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students on a variety of committees as well as the entire division of Student Affairs.

Comfortable meeting with student groups to assess needs and emerging campus climate issues and strong strategic planning skills to lead strategic planning efforts for the division, DoS cluster, and university level.

  • Strong assessment skills and experience utilizing data on an ongoing basis to develop and adjust practice and programming in alignment with emerging best practices and student needs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and seek counsel from the Dean of Students when appropriate.
  • Strong facilitation skills to assist and craft professional development sessions for professional staff as well as lead student discussions.
  • Ability to plan retreats, team build and build a collective vision.
  • Strong communication skills that are effective in communicating the direction of the Organization and Institution to direct reports.
  • Ability to support and challenge students to aid in their development and growth.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills are demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate the resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle issues of complex and extreme political sensitivity and demonstrate balanced judgment and exceptional discretion.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Advance knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively meeting deadlines and complete assigned projects in a timely manner.

Department Custom Scope :

This role will report directly to the AVC / Dean of Students and will serve on the DOS leadership team. The incumbent will provide direct oversight and leadership to the UCR Identity Center Cluster collectively known as the Ethnic and Gender Centers (E&Gs).

Identity Centers are comprised of the LGBTRC, Undocumented Student Programs, Foster Youth Support Services, Native American Students Programs, Asian Pacific Student Programs, African Student Programs, Chicano Student Programs, Women's Resource Center, and the Middle Eastern Student Center.

This role will work collaboratively with campus partners to respond to campus climate issues and first amendment activity as needed.

The Associate Dean of Students will represent and elevate the work of the UC Riverside Identity Centers as the campus-wide liaison for DEI issues that impact the student experience and leads student development programs focused on intersectionality, sense of belonging and student success through leadership of the UCR Identity Centers.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develops, interprets, and administers complex Student Life & Development programs.
  • Accountable for achievement of business strategies. Create and support a formal structure which engages departments in active collaboration to provide broad and comprehensive support and assistance to student organizations including advising, support and advocacy;

development of opportunities for students to gain leadership and organizational skills; assistance with University recognition, recruitment, program and event planning, accessing University resources, understanding and negotiating University policies and procedures.

  • Oversees analysis and policy development for the programs' issues and processes.
  • Supports the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students in the analysis, assessment, and development of policies within the student affairs division to meet organizational objectives.

Together with the Ethnic and Gender Directors, works to identify and address policy gaps to align with university policy and processes.

Serves on division and university-wide policy and strategic planning committees. Work in alignment with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to create a strong consistent partnership that frames equity work for the Ethnic and Gender Centers as well as the entire campus community.

Oversee departmental operating budgets involving multiple fund sources and types of funds. Work closely with Directors, to establish budget priorities that are consistent with campus, divisional, and departmental goals and objectives.

Interpret and apply University policies to insure appropriate use of funds. Ensure that optimal and timely use of funds are consistent with project goals and pertinent regulations, as well as monitoring that spending is in line with budgets.

  • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Assess staff performance through feedback, performance evaluations, professional development needs assessments, addresses arising issues through feedback and at times mediation.

Works with Human Resources to ensure that all staff are in compliance with university policies, expectations and job performance.

Deals with highly complex personnel matters with the ability to navigate confidentiality.

Provide leadership and direction in the planning, implementation and assessment of an array of programs and initiatives in collaboration with the Ethnic and Gender Centers and other campus partners.

Lead in the development of new programming to showcase the work of UCR's identity centers to new incoming students in collaboration with colleagues and units across the institution.

Strong experience in strategic planning to lead efforts within the cluster, organization and university level. Learn, assess and successfully navigate the campus landscape with tact and diplomacy to maintain working relationships and forge new ones.

This role will serve as the liaison between the identity centers and senior level leadership. This role will also lead team building and retreats for the identity centers and the AVC / DOS areas.

Command of student development theory as well as equity, diversity and social justice frameworks to apply to practice. Stay abreast of emerging best practices to design and implement new practices within the Identity Center model.

Benchmarking other campuses practices to ensure that the UCR Ethnic and Gender Centers are using the most innovative approaches for student success.

Continue to strengthen vital relationships with academic affairs, UCPD and other campus partners. Lead, identify, and develop priorities for identity center student services initiatives and outreach programs in consultation with the directors.

  • This includes financial functions, processes, management approaches, team dynamics and projects.
  • Advises senior management on matters concerning several functional areas, departments, and / or clients.

Expectation to serve on national professional associations such as University Innovation Alliance (UIA), NASPA, ACPA and others as appropriate in the alignment with the areas of purview.

Other duties as assigned with the classification level of this position by the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs or the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students.
