JOB SUMMARY :

  • Police Officer Recruit : This position requires a High School diploma or equivalent; must be 21 years of age or older; be a Citizen of the Unite States;
  • Possess a valid Georgia state drivers license Class C; Pass employment physical examination including drug test and polygraph;
  • No conviction of a felony or misdemeanor (other than traffic violations) within the past five (5) years; No conviction of more than three (3) moving violations in the past three (3) years;

Qualify annually with firearms; Possess good moral character; and Possess Basic Peace Officer Certification through the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hire.

Certified Police Officer : This position is a certified police officer position, as required by Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Act, in general law enforcement work responsible for protecting life / property and enforcing laws / ordinances.

Work involves routine patrol work, responding to emergency calls and alarms, addressing citizen complaints, conducting preliminary investigations, completing special detail assignments, and performing administrative duties.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS : Patrols the City to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars; enforces laws and ordinances;

protects life and property; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity; and watches for suspicious persons or vehicles.

Enforces traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; routinely inspects roadways, bridges, and traffic signals and signs to find and report any hazardous conditions.

Drives defensively. Performs business and residential security checks; checks building doors, windows, gates, and fences to ensure building / home is secured.

  • Reports buildings, homes, equipment, or vehicles that are not secured; ensures the safety and well-being of residents as well as employees on duty;
  • and learns employee work patterns and alerts employees to possible suspects and crime prevention. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls including calls for assistance, disturbance calls, and complaints of crimes;
  • enforces federal, state, and local laws by performing warrant, felony, or misdemeanor arrests; implements physical confrontation when necessary;
  • and protects the civil rights of person in custody. Investigates traffic accidents, ranging from minor incidents to fatal accidents, by establishing point of impact, interviewing witnesses, and collecting, preserving, and packaging evidence;
  • detects drunk drivers; performs sobriety evaluations; and books driving under the influence (DUI) suspects. Secures and protects crime scenes by : establishing boundaries;

detaining victims, suspects, and witnesses; locating and identifying evidence; and briefing supervisors and investigators on their arrival.

Serves as first-responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of traffic and other accidents; assists fire and emergency medical services in treating and transporting victims.

  • Prepares and maintains a wide variety of department records and reports in compliance with department and legal policies and procedures;
  • and prepares and files thorough written case reports. Gives advice on laws, ordinances, and general information to the public;

renders advice on domestic disturbances; and assists citizens in need. Maintains assigned uniform, vehicle, and equipment in accordance with department policy and procedures.

  • Presents evidence and testimony in courts of law; assists in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases. Assists stranded motorists;
  • directs traffic when necessary; escorts special processions; assists with parades and road closures; escorts funeral processions;

and transports prisoners to jail. Participates in department training programs. Participates in community relations projects as required.

Serves and executes criminal and traffic warrants on felony and misdemeanor suspects. Serves as Municipal Court Bailiff when assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education and Experience : Requires High School diploma or equivalent. Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications : Valid Georgia state drivers license Class C. Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Possess Basic Peace Officer Certification through the State of Georgia.

Special Requirements : Pass employment physical examination including drug screening. Qualify -annually with firearms.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Knowledge or the ability to learn modern methods and practices of criminal investigation, gathering evidence, preservation of evidence, and identification.

Knowledge of or the ability to learn the geography of the City and the location of important buildings and areas. Knowledge of or the ability to learn the department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge of or the ability to learn law enforcement investigation methods, procedures, and techniques and the ability to apply such knowledge to specific situations.

Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and legal procedures. Skill in the use of firearms. Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports.

Ability to work routinely under highly traumatic conditions including life-threatening situations. Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.

Ability to operate a law enforcement vehicle during both the day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.

Ability to obtain information through interviews, interrogations, and observation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, City officials, and the general public.

Ability to drive and operate the department assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to deal courteously and fairly with the public.

Ability to communicate clearly and effective both orally and writing. Ability to analyze situations and to take quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action given due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The work is medium work and requires exerting : up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; up to 30 pounds of force frequently;

and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required : balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : This work may take place indoors or outdoors, under dangerous circumstances, and under conditions which may include moderate noise.

STARTING SALARY : $56,667.00
