A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and / or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
The medical assistant assists in the delivery of health care for patients per their scope of practice, in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger.
This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State guidelines and are trained and assigned to manage the practices' patient population.
Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.

Department Position Summary :
The employee must be able to :
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in physician practice.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include :
oChecking schedules and organizing patient flow
oAccompanying patients to exam / procedure room
oAssisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing,
collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient history
oPerforming screenings per provider guideline
oAssisting providers / nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to
patients / families, answering calls and providing pertinent information.
Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include :
oSending / receiving patient medical records
oObtaining lab / x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
oCompleting forms / requisitions as needed
oScheduling appointments
oVerifying insurance coverage and patient demographics
oManaging and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately
oReviewing in basket messages
Fulfill environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include :
oSetting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols
oCleaning exam / procedure rooms, instruments, equipment between patient visits to maintain
infection control
oRunning quality controls on equipment as required and documenting / record keeping
