Job Summary :
The Principal Systems Engineer works with a strong cross-functional team focused on developing and delivering high performance / high reliability integrated systems for the U.
S. Department of Defense and other customers. This position will be an authority in Systems Engineering determining sensor, mechanical, electrical, and software / firmware system specifications, input / output processes and working parameters for system compatibility.
S / He drives and coordinates the design of subsystems and their integration into the total system. The position identifies, analyzes, and resolves program support deficiencies and develops and recommends corrective actions.
The role will also lead the development, implementation, and improvement of company engineering processes with a concentration on new and existing product development, project management, intellectual property development and expansion of overall system engineering capabilities.
The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated competency in decision-making, flexibility, planning and organizing, initiative, and interpersonal skills and be a champion of cross-team collaboration while driving the well-being of the overall organization.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities :
Coordinate cross functional activities with all design / engineering functions; mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software
Transform a customer / business operational need into a description of system specifications and performance parameters, and system configuration using definition, analysis, synthesis, design, test and evaluation
Support Business Development and Sales & Product Management in the areas of customer requirement analysis, proposal writing, and technical support
Develop flow down specifications for systems and subsystems
Provide interdisciplinary design and product support to ensure engineering implementation will meet system specifications
Interface with other operational teams; Supply Chain, Customer Service & Support, Quality & Compliance and Mission Systems
Perform analyses for cost, reliability, maintainability, testability, survivability, and other quality factors
Perform risk assessments and generate mitigation plans
Develop verification and validation methods, processes, logic, and plans in support of program milestones
Oversee technical progress and direction of program
Provide a logical, methodical system design approach to optimize the completeness of the system design including hardware, software, facilities, personnel, and support equipment
Manage engineering and business practices that improve design cycles, cost of manufacture, and related support initiatives
Conceptualize, oversee, and implement engineering changes
Provide technical interface with customers
Required Job Qualifications :
Bachelor’s Degree preferred with 12+ years of experience; or Master’s Degree / PhD preferred with 8+ years of experience (electro-mechanical and / or software and related systems experience)
Ability to define and conduct experiments to identify the root cause of difficult interdisciplinary technical problems, capable of analyzing alternate approaches and developing practical solutions to solve complex problems
Strong written communication skills to support the dissemination of timely information to collaborative teams
Influential oral communication and presentation skills; when making oral and graphical presentations able to secure the interest and involvement of the team while developing / delivering a clear and concise message
Strong collaboration and teamwork is necessary to establish successful working relationships with product team and when working with other parts of the company
Ability to quickly learn new or unfamiliar technology and products
Continuous learner; able to learn new approaches, tools, and methodologies to stay ahead of technology changes as they relate to systems engineering
Personal initiative and motivation is vital, to achieve desired performance results with projects that support the organization
Able and willing to travel domestically up to 25% at times.
US DoD Secret Security Clearance / ability to obtain
Desired Job Qualifications :
Knowledge in program management / scheduling, EAC / ETC (Estimate to Complete / Estimate at Completion), and earned value analysis
Experience with various engineering design tools (e.g. Solidworks, EPDM) greatly desired
Understanding of chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) sensors and devices and related operational mission requirements desired
Familiarity Electro-Optical / Infra-Red (EO / IR( camera systems, radar systems, and experience with electro-mechanical systems and controls desired
Proven record in project management, product development (phase-gate) and New Product Introductions (NPI)
