The Personal Care Assistant (Caregiver) provides various personal care and related paraprofessional services in accordance with an established plan of care. This role focuses on assisting clients in their homes, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
Essential Responsibilities
Follow agency policies and procedures.Work under the supervision of a designated supervisor.Assist clients with activities of daily living, including :Personal hygiene (bathing, grooming, oral care, skin care)Ambulation and mobility supportMeal preparation and feeding assistanceDressing and groomingToileting and incontinence carePerform additional tasks as directed by a nurse for specific clients, such as :Assisting with ostomy appliance changesReinforcing non-sterile dressingsHelping with mobility aids (canes, walkers, wheelchairs, lifts)Assisting with prescribed range-of-motion exercisesMeasuring and preparing special dietsMonitoring intake and outputTaking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure)Assisting with external catheter applicationHelping with the application of arm or leg splintsTasks Not Performed by Personal Care Assistants
Personal Care Assistants are not permitted to perform the following :
Sterile dressing changesCatheterization or wound irrigationMedication administration (including oral medications, eye drops, or medicated ointments)IV or parenteral medication administrationTracheotomy care or suctioningTube feedings (nasogastric or gastrostomy)Nail care for clients with diabetes or circulatory issuesAny personal health service not included in the approved task listHousekeeping Responsibilities
Personal Care Assistants may assist with light housekeeping to support the client’s self-care, including :
Vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and moppingWashing dishes and doing laundryCleaning bathrooms and other living areasTasks Not Performed by Personal Care Assistants
Heavy-duty cleaning (washing walls, waxing floors, deep cleaning)Home repairs or maintenanceYard work or outdoor maintenanceQualifications
High school diploma or GED preferredAt least six months of experience as a Personal Care Assistant in a healthcare setting (home or facility)Completion of a state-approved Nurse Aide or Personal Care Assistant courseStrong interpersonal skillsAbility to read, write, speak, and understand EnglishWork Environment & Availability
