Maintenance Worker I

Under the general oversight of the Public Works Director, and the direct supervision of Public Works Supervisors, the Maintenance Worker I performs maintenance and repairs on various City infrastructure. The Maintenance Worker I may also receive direction from Maintenance Worker Leads and received instructions from the Maintenance Worker II staff as necessary.

Work areas include, but are not limited to streets, sewer systems, stormwater systems and water systems. The position supports the goal of maintaining a clean, safe, and functional environment for all city patrons and employees.

This is a full time position represented by Teamster Local 763.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of roads using crushed rock, cold / hot asphalt, and crack sealing.
  • Install and maintain traffic control and street identification signs.
  • Direct traffic.
  • Install and clean catch basins, storm sewer lines and easements.
  • Mow grass and maintain weed control in rights-of-way.
  • Paint crosswalks and centerlines.
  • Read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications as needed, providing as-built or other necessary drawings.
  • Install water lines, hydrants, valves and water services; perform flushing of water systems.
  • Read and record water meter readings.
  • Perform water service turn-ons and turn-offs as directed.
  • Check meters for proper functionality, reporting defects and cleaning meter boxes as needed.
  • Remove, replace and adjust water meters and appurtenances.
  • Install sewer lines, manholes, and clean outs; clean / repair lines.
  • Maintain and inspect sewer easements.
  • Assist in the operation and inspection of lift stations, including performing minor repairs.
  • Provide general assistance with other public works and maintenance tasks as needed...

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines :

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational training in water or wastewater operations or a related field is preferred.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license (or ability to obtain one at time of hire) with a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.
  • Ability to provide documents verifying identity and United States work authorization as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Special Requirements :

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a flagging certificate and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required, or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Successful completion of drug and alcohol testing as per federal Department of Transportation requirements (if applicable).
  • Knowledge of :

  • Proficient in the use and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Safe operation of job-specific equipment, including but not limited to, brooms, hand saws, hammers, edgers, chainsaws, power trimmers, shovels, rakes, lawn mowers (walk-behind and riding), jackhammers, blowers, backhoes, paint stripers, rudders, compaction rollers, compressors.
  • Operation of City vehicles, such as standard pickups, sedans, non-air brake dump trucks.
  • For CDL holders : safe operation of vehicles with air brakes, including but not limited to, sweepers, dump trucks, vactors, water service trucks.
  • Ability to :

  • Work safely and remain alert in high-traffic areas and active job sites.
  • Lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Learn and apply new techniques, methods, and safety practices.
  • Operate PC-based software, including Windows, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Understand and communicate technical information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time to direct traffic and operate machinery.
  • Maintain accurate records and report issues or equipment in need of attention.
  • Accept and uphold public service responsibility for the health and welfare of the community.
  • Move across uneven terrain and maintain a safe environment for yourself and co-workers.
  • Operate or drive standard City vehicles, including those with manual transmissions, to and from job sites throughout the workday.
  • Skills :

  • Strong interpersonal skills when interacting with a diverse public and team.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, even under tight deadlines or frequent interruptions and to shift priorities as workload or emergencies dictate.
  • Working Conditions and Physical Requirements :

    This position involves performing duties outdoors, where employees may be exposed to inclement weather. Work includes heavy physical labor, operating machinery, and working in confined spaces (e.g. manholes, catch basins, sewer lift stations, water control stations and trenches during wet or dry conditions). Workers will be exposed to traffic, loud noises, offensive smells, dust, dirt, mud, water, sewage and vicious dogs. Moderate exposure to insect bites or poison ivy and chemical irritants produced by solvents and / or chemicals.

    Employees must have the physical stamina to meet job demands, including the ability to kneel, stoop, bend, climb ladders, reach, push / pull, lift, sit, stand, walk, crouch, crawl, twist, carry materials. The role also requires strong vision, including close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color differentiation.

    This position reports directly to the Public Works Supervisor(s) and may receive directions from Maintenance Worker Leads, as well as instructions from the Maintenance Worker II staff and under general oversight of the Public Works Director.

    Compensation :

    Hourly wage range : $29.60-$36.38. The full pay range is posted for transparency purposes. New hire's compensation is placed between the start and midpoint of the range, based on qualifications, skills and experience. This approach ensures internal equity, as well as room for growth and progression within the pay band over time.
