Department Summary

The mission of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA is to leverage public and private investment for nanoscience research at the interfaces between disciplines, translate discoveries into knowledge-driven commercial enterprises, and educate the next generation of scientists and engineers.

At CNSI, engineers and oncologists create drug-delivery systems to treat cancer. Chemists, physicists, and neurologists develop nanoelectronic sensors for mapping the brain.

Environmental engineers and biologists use nanobiotechnology to clean pollutants from water. The CNSI is where collaboration drives discovery, creativity triggers innovation and ideas that will define our future become a reality.

As one of four Governor Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation (GGDISI), the CNSI builds on a visionary investment in future education, research, and technological resources given by the State of California.

CNSI leverages public-private partnerships to support research areas critical to sustaining California's economic growth and competitiveness in the global marketplace.

The Institutes opens doors to new understanding, new applications, and new products through essential research in biomedicine, physical sciences, engineering, nanosystems, and information technology.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager and the Senior Fund Manager for Operations, the Business and Finance Analyst is responsible for a variety of duties in support of the day-to-day financial operations of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) (the Institute), which include payroll, personnel and purchasing.

The Business and Finance Analyst is responsible for the full range of personnel actions for administrative and research staff as well as casual staff, including work-study students.

The Business and Finance Analyst is also responsible for purchasing for the Institute's incubator program (start-up companies resident in the CNSI Building).

Assignments will be dependent on the various needs of the Institute and may change at the discretion of the Managers, Executive Director, and Director of the Institute.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with staff, faculty members, and students; communicating effectively with individuals and groups with different interests and social, educational, and professional backgrounds.

Proven ability to work in a team-oriented environment (Required)

• Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize tasks / projects while keeping appropriate personnel apprised of status on a regular basis (Required)
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle privileged information with appropriate sensitivity. (Required)
• Strong verbal communication skills. Ability to present information, including financial and technical information, effectively to a wide range of audiences. (Required)
• Ability to work successfully under pressure and to handle competing priorities with minimal supervision. (Required)
• Self-management skills that allow the individual to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)
• Demonstrated understanding and experience of the research environment within the complexity of a higher education institution. (Required)
• Demonstrated customer oriented skills to professionally, effectively, courteously and quickly respond to requests from customers, and clients including co-workers, all Departmental staff, CNSI staff, university personnel and others. (Required)
• Excellent ability to work in a Windows PC environment and demonstrated ability to utilize essential software applications (Word, Excel, Power Point) in order to prepare correspondence, reports and presentation materials with speed and accuracy. (Required)
• Detailed working knowledge of the UC Path personnel / payroll system, personnel form, academic personnel policies and procedures, ability to process on-line entries and forms required to accomplish various academic personnel transactions (Preferred)
• Working knowledge of University policy and procedures on human resource management, informational and service resources;

ability to interact with various supporting units to produce desired information and / or results; skill in discerning applicability and / or information. (Preferred)

Familiarity with university systems including UCPath, BruinBuy+, and Concur. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
