Machinist Helper
THE POSITIONThe position of Machinist Helper is responsible for performing semi-skilled level machine work such as assisting Machinists performing highly skilled work in the set up and operation of a variety of machine tools to produce and repair precision parts.
This position will assist Machinists trouble-shooting faulty equipment, and involves the construction of small buildings.
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENTThe Ideal Candidate will : Be knowledgeable of industry standard methods and practices of machining, mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, and the use, maintenance, and repair of tools and equipment used in the machine shop and in the field.
Have a strong aptitude for mechanical and construction theory and practicesWork well with others including following instructions and direction from Journey Level Machinists and supervisors.
Able to fabricate and weld using gas and electric welder is preferred. Performs semi-skilled work assisting journey-level Machinists in the performance of duties both in the machine shop and field.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe class of Machinist Helper performs semi-skilled work under direct supervision and is distinguished from the next higher class of Machinist in that the latter performs skilled journey-level machine work under general supervision.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDSupervision is provided by a Machinist Supervisor. Functional supervision may be provided by a Machinist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDepending upon the assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following : - Operate and maintain bench lathes, drill presses, milling and shaping machines, grinders, gas and electric welders, and other common tools used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
- Assist in the installation, adjustment, and repair of mechanical equipment such as pumps, compressors, chlorinators, engines, motors, blowers, metering devices, and plumbing used with water, gas, oil, chemical, heating, and sewage systems.
- Assist in the maintenance of mechanical systems of electrical power plants and heating and ventilating plants.- Assist in trouble shooting and maintenance of electrical motors and related equipment.
- Construct and repair various types of buildings, sheds, scaffolds, forms, fences, and other structures.- Make concrete forms;
mix and pour concrete.- Build lockers, shelves, doors, and window frames.- Drive and operate trucks and trailers, dump trucks, cranes, and forklifts.
- Load and unload trucks carrying hazardous materials and other materials; work on operating systems containing hazardous materials.
- Cut and thread pipe; pack pumps and valves.- Scrape, paint, and finish wood, metal, and concrete surfaces.- Clean and maintain tools, related equipment, shops, and vehicles.
- Keep simple reports and help maintain records.- Respond to emergencies on an on-call basis as required.- Perform related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of : - The practices, tools, methods, and equipment used in machine shop and field equipment maintenance and repair.
Maintenance and repair materials and their appropriate uses.- Occupational hazards and safe working methods.- Basic mechanical and construction theory and practice.
Ability to : - Perform semi-skilled machine tool work.- Weld with both gas and electric welding equipment.- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.- Work in confined spaces, on temporary scaffolding, on high structures, and in sewage wet pits.
- Recognize and deal with hazardous situations.- Work in high pressure situations.- Lift and handle heavy equipment and materials.
- Rebuild and repair a variety of mechanical equipment.Skill in : - The care and use of machine tools and equipment.- The care and use of welding tools and equipment.
- The care and use of hand, power, and construction-related tools.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEExperience : One year of experience in a machine shop or performing equipment maintenance and repair.
- OR-Six months of experience in a machine shop or performing equipment maintenance and repair; and nine units from an accredited college which include courses related to fabrication, introductory and intermediate machine tool processes, and advanced machine shop mathematics.
PROOF OF EDUCATIONShould education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university / college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment.

Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONSDriver License : Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment.
Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Possession of a valid California Class B Driver License, with the appropriate endorsements, is required by the end of the probationary period.
Individuals who fail to obtain the license will not pass probation. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Possession of a valid California Class A Driver License with the appropriate endorsements is required for some assignments.
Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.Assessment : If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test.
Respiratory Protective Equipment : Work in this class requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven, when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.
Residency Requirement : Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th - 30th Streets within one year following appointment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD : Employees must complete twelve months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.
