Position Summary

The Career Education Options (CEO) Program is seeking qualified candidates for a part-time adjunct instructor position in CEO's Language Integration Program (LIP) for the 2023-24 academic year.

The successful candidate will teach one 15 credit elementary and / or intermediate Language Integration Program (LIP) course per quarter while creating inclusive and equitable learning environments for a diverse student population.

In addition, you will serve as the advisor for your students, helping them navigate resources at the college and community.

You will also work closely with other LIP instructors Faculty are under the general direction of the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and are responsible primarily to the Director of the Center for High School Programs.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6050.02 - $7375.17 . Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments.

Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement.

Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment / project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc.

Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

The Career Education Options (CEO) Youth Re-engagement Program works with youth ages 16-21, who are credit deficient and / or at-risk of dropping out of high school.

The Language Integration Program (LIP), which falls under the Career Education Options (CEO) umbrella, enables students to learn academic English.

Students in both programs work toward an AA degree, GED, high school diploma or professional / technical certificate while receiving wrap-around services and support in order to achieve their educational goals.

Essential Functions

  • Teach 15 credits (1 courses) of LIP per quarter at the first- and second-year levels on a variety schedules and modalities (face to face, hybrid, online)
  • Prepare and implement lessons to achieve assigned courses' learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate prospective students' language proficiency and place them in appropriate course levels.
  • Ongoing curriculum development, assessment, revision, and implementation through inter- and intra-departmental cooperation and collaboration
  • Maintain knowledge and skills current in discipline and area of assignment.
  • Participate in the life and culture of the department, division, and college, including the college-wide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess MATESOL or MEd with ESL certification.
  • Experience working with youth aged 16 21.
  • Experience teaching at secondary, community college, or university level.
  • Experience designing curriculum.
  • Availability for testing / intake, collaboration across campus services and departments
  • Willingness and ability to teach in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an inclusive manner with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years or more experience teaching ELL at the community college level
  • Experience teaching in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online)
  • Familiarity with recent pedagogical developments in the field of ELL
  • Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment techniques that engage students and emphasize interaction.
  • Experience with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience in assessing student proficiency for placement in the appropriate level of ELL.
  • Evidence of effective intercultural communication skills, collegiality, and working collaboratively with colleagues in an intercultural department.
  • Awareness of immigration / refugee / educational trauma
  • Experience advising and helping guide students to college and community resources.
