The University of Iowa Community Clinics is seeking a patient centered 50% Sonographer to perform a variety of ultrasound procedures / non-invasive procedures in our Johnston Clinic (Des Moines).

This position will perform a variety of complex ultrasound procedures at an advanced level that requires independent judgment and initiative in order to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating patient illness, participate in educational activities, develop scanning protocols, provide leadership by participating in special projects and maintains multiple certifications in related specialty area specifically related to Hepatology patients.

This position will provide exceptional care to both our adult population surrounding hepatitis, liver failure, and pancreato-biliary disease and responsible for patient care in a multi-specialty clinic working with both adult and pediatric patients.

This position will mainly support our Johnston Clinic but could float to other patient specialties / clinic locations including but not limited to : Pediatrics and / or Specialty / Outreach Clinics.

Our liver care experts offer diagnostic procedures and treatment for patients with all forms of liver disease, including those requiring liver transplantation.

The biliary tract consists of ducts that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and then to the small intestine. This position comes with the University of Iowa's generous, full benefit package including double-match retirement, paid vacation and sick leave and much more!

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Perform complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
  • Consult with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
  • Document exam information as required by departmental standards.
  • Evaluate images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality.
  • Assist with and provide ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
  • Provide information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and / or therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform patient care techniques including skin preparation, I.V. placement, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support;

prepare and administer contrast material to patients.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Instruct and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Instruct medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
  • Determine equipment malfunctions and contact repair service.
  • Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
  • Maintain certification as specified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Salary : $29,884 - $54,089 (based on years of experience) Benefits Highlights :

Percent of Time : 50%

Schedule : Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday variable hours between 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00PM, clinical need will be scheduled each Wednesday 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM.

No weekends, No on call, No Holidays. Please note : training will take place in Iowa City.

Education Required : Requires completion of one of the following educational pathways :

  • CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or
  • Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.

plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography, or

Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography

Experience Required :

Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment in at least one specialty area (i.

e. Abdomen or Obstetrics / Gynecology) with preference given for two or more specialties.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Driver’s License and ability to meet University of Iowa Fleet Safety Standards is required.

Highly Desired Qualification :

Certification / membership in appropriate professional specialty.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Previous work experience in abdominal scanning.
  • Previous experience with EPIC.
  • Prior work experience in Pediatrics.
  • Previous experience with doppler for liver and kidney.
