Position definition : To provide leadership for implementing and maintaining a comprehensive school health services program which enhances the educational process through the removal of health barriers to learning by promoting an optimal level of health, wellness and safety for students and employees.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Explicitly model, through communication and actions, the core values and beliefs in the district’s goals and mission;
  • Execute tasks connected to the Strategic Plan in the professional development department.
  • Provide professional development to administrators and staff on district approved topics and strategies as aligned to the D300 Strategic Plan;
  • Administration of Board Policies and Administration Regulations applicable to the area of school health services.
  • Preparation of the School Health Services budget.
  • Administration and coordination of a comprehensive school health program including :
  • Student physical, dental, eye examinations and immunization in accordance with state law
  • hearing and vision screening of students
  • Emergency care of student injury and sickness
  • Communicable disease control
  • Referral of identified student health concerns
  • Health record-keeping in accordance with state law
  • Safe and healthful school environment
  • Health promotion and support to employees
  • Provide for schools, supplies, and equipment necessary to meet the daily needs of students.
  • Assess changing health services needs and make suggestions and procedure changes for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
  • Conducts in-service meetings for Health Office Personnel for the purpose of conveying and / or sharing information on student health needs, service delivery, educational programs, and / or improving professional skills and knowledge.
  • Develops and maintains community partnerships for the purpose of improving access to resources that benefit the health and wellness of students, families and the community.
  • Collect and analyze health related data (immunization records, medical records, incidence of specific disease) and make recommendations to administration based upon data.
  • Submit student health reports and statistics as required to the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Department of Public Health and local Health Departments
  • Liaison between School District and local Health Departments
  • Collaborate and make recommendations on development and implementation of COVID and other emergency health protocols in schools.
  • Assist with the implementation of any mass vaccination programs and protocols.
  • Provide leadership in interpreting the health program, state law and local regulations regarding health to students, staff members, parents and the community.
  • Oversight of employee CPR / AED training program and Stop the Bleed Training.
  • Oversight of the district AED policy, procedure and maintenance of equipment.
  • Serve as oversight for the Student Accident Insurance Program
  • Manages the District Medicaid reimbursement program.
  • Ensures that health-related services for students with disabilities are in alignment with provisions that are mandated within each student IEP or 504 plan.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring and training of nursing staff.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, education, public health , or a health-related program.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of nursing experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in nursing leadership position or School Nursing.
  • Illinois Registered Nurse License
  • Professional Educator License
  • Certified School Nurse (CSN) endorsement
  • CPR / AED certificate (preferable AHA instructor)
  • Must have valid Illinois Hearing and Vision screener certification

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act
  • Knowledge of the Illinois School Code
  • Understanding of IDEA, ADA, and other laws supporting individuals with disabilities
  • Knowledge of State and local health requirements and reporting procedures
  • Understanding of Illinois Communicable Disease Control
  • Knowledge of all applicable Federal and State Education requirements
  • Knowledge of the community and community resources.

Performance Evaluation / Accountability :

Performance evaluated annually in accordance with Illinois School Code and D300 Administrative Procedures
