Job Overview

We are searching for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator to lead strategic partnerships and outreach with local and global science and policy organizations and to promote the research and programs of ISMSM and STIA.

They work with the Directors of the Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology (ISMSM) and the Science, Technology and International Affairs Program (STIA) to develop and implement outreach, communications and fundraising plans for ISMSM and STIA in partnership with communications staff in the School of Foreign Service and the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of Institutional Partnerships at Georgetown.

Job tasks include meeting regularly with ISMSM and STIA directors and program staff as well as individual faculty to develop content for outreach that promotes both programs' original research and programming, and meeting with relevant stakeholders for targeted outreach and fundraising.

Responsibilities

Donor Relations

  • Manage cultivation, relationship building and stewardship efforts for a portfolio of donors, funding agencies and industry partners in partnership with GU advancement teams and GU Office of Technology Commercialization;
  • In coordination with the STIA Director, develop a new external advisory board for STIA including identifying members and putting together annual or biannual (TBD) meetings partnership with STIA staff;
  • and develop reports for the board about the Program activities and development plans;
  • Plan and coordinate biannual advisory board meetings for ISMSM; and develop reports for the board about the Institute activities and development plans;
  • Engage directly with the relevant university offices on communications and fundraising strategy and implementation to support the creation of a strategic development plan for each program;
  • Provide input in the development of all general component materials and information for distribution to current and prospective funders and for broader public outreach; and
  • Contribute to grant preparation as needed and in partnership with program faculty / staff, OIP / Advancement and the Office of Research Services.

Communications

  • Coordinate directly with communications staff across the university to ensure STIA and ISMSM are incorporated into broader university communications campaigns;
  • Work closely with the STIA and ISMSM program Directors, staff and faculty to develop content for weekly newsletters, website content, social media content, and other communications materials to engage with the public and targeted audiences; and
  • Develop a database of journalists and other key audiences to target outreach of ISMSM and STIA research and programming.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Directors of ISMSM and STIA, the Communications & Outreach Coordinator holds a joint position between the two programs (51% ISMSM-49 STIA%).

Though the position is housed in ISMSM for administrative purposes, but the directors of both programs are responsible for all job related approvals and performance reviews.

This position has been designated as Hybrid. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field or in science policy - preference for a Master's degree in a relevant field
  • 2-4 years of experience in communications and / or fundraising or donor relations
  • Ability to communicate complicated scientific concepts to a general audience
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and social skills required. Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills (internal and external)
  • A professional attitude in representing ISMSM and STIA to different audiences
  • Highly organized with the ability to interface regularly with colleagues, foundation, corporate, and other partners, including high-profile individuals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and goals, prioritize among assignments, problem-solve, and persist toward meeting goals
  • Familiarity with the science policy landscape in the Washington, DC area

Term

This is a 1-year term position, subject to potential renewal based on funding and performance.

Drawing on Georgetown's expertise across international affairs, public policy, global health, environmental studies and security studies, the School of Foreign Service (SFS) established the Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) program in 1982 to educate the next generation of leaders skilled in science and technology, create knowledge that will advance cross-cutting solutions for today's most pressing issues, and drive innovation at the nexus of science and international affairs.

ABOUT ISMSM

Georgetown's Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology, or I(SM)2, launched in 2011 as the result of $6.9 Million construction grant from NIST, serves to catalyze the development of fundamental principles and practical measurement tools that can be applied to soft matter synthesis and precision measurement and characterization (metrology).

The Institute comprises faculty primarily from the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, Biology, as well as Oncology in the Medical School.

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
