The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking experienced Registered Nurses (RNs) with a desire to join our premier multidisciplinary team in our Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center .

The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center Hematology and Medical Oncology unit consists of two 16 bed inpatient units focusing on the care of hematology and medical oncology patients.

Care provided includes a wide range of acuity levels of patients on the cancer care continuum. Care ranges from initial diagnosis and treatment, disease-related symptom management and pain control, long-term survivorship, or end of life.

What You Will Do :

We are seeking Registered Nurses (RN) who will be competent in the skills / knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance.

He / she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty.

Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.

  • Nurses are viewed as colleagues in our partnership with the medical team with a multi-discipline approach to care. This includes providing integrated care working with the physicians, social workers, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.
  • Our patient ratio during the day shift is 3 : 1. You will have the opportunity to build relationships with families and many times patients will return to the unit to give updates and say Thank You.
  • Many of our staff have worked together for more than ten years.

This nurse will be competent in the skills / knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He / she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter.

Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.

Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in the development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service, and cost-effectiveness at the unit level.

Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.

General Summary

This role is reserved for the new graduate or nurse with less than 12 months experience . The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice.

It is expected that a nurse in this role successfully pass the probationary period within 12 months (18 months maximum with a defined action plan developed with manager).

Utilizes the nursing process as the frame of reference for practice as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to develop own practice, and to support group practice goals at the unit level.

Functions effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team. Is accountable to patient, family and team members for care provided, and to the nurse manager for totality of work performance.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Clinical Practice / Care Delivery

  • Novice; focus of clinical practice / care delivery is on own learning
  • Uses / applies evidence based practice; accesses appropriate resources
  • Follows unit based protocols, documentation, pathways, etc
  • Involves patient and family in care; follows Relationship Based Care guidelines
  • Conducts patient / family needs assessment; initiates and documents patient / family education
  • Assists with precepting students, PCT or peer for isolated days (not accountable for entire orientation); may assist with share days or shadow days PRN

Professional Development

  • Responsible for accessing education applicable to self professional development; focus on completion of competencies appropriate for patient care setting.
  • Successful completion of orientation within 12 months (18 months for those with an identified development plan).
  • Accountable for orientation e.g. assignments, goal setting, communication of needs, attending required orientation meetings, etc).
  • Accountable for achieving / maintaining requirements for unit practice, such as Triage for ED nurses, arrest team role for ICUs.
  • Attends mandatory training and education classes specific to unit / department.
  • Support and attend educational offerings such as Journal Clubs, Nursing Grand Rounds, in-services.

Service Quality / Safety

  • Follows unit protocols and Best Practices addressing NSQI.
  • Supports unit based initiatives for process improvement plans, including data collection.
  • Aware of patient / family satisfaction scores and contributes to unit initiatives for improvement.
  • Recognizes potential / actual patient / family issues and seeks assistance to address.
  • Participates in collecting data to evaluate RBC outcomes, such as hand offs, medication safety, etc.
  • Participates in some or all elements of research.

Unit Operations

  • Supports Charge Nurse role and demonstrates basic understanding of the role.
  • Actively contributes to teamwork (cooperates with peers, flexible with assignments, takes admissions as required, etc).
  • May orient to charge if needed (situation dependent upon unit and individual’s progress).
  • Attends staff meetings (per unit protocols).
  • Aware of and supports unit, divisional and organizational governance structure and opportunities.
  • Participates in unit level decision making via governance model; provides feedback as appropriate.
  • Participates in organizational initiatives such as surveys (Employee Opinion, MHA Retention and others).
  • Provides feedback for peer review as requested.
  • Maintains standards for unit operations (equipment maintenance, scheduling guidelines, etc).
  • Maintains regulatory requirements for JCAHO readiness; participates in tracer activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.

Provides the care needed as described in the unit / area / department policies and procedures.

Qualifications

III. Education & Experience

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
