Description of Work Unit : Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities.
The NREL is a research and teaching unit at CSU with a mission to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through new knowledge generation and application.
Position Summary : The successful candidate will use the APEX ecosystem modeling tool to understand how variability in forage production influences livestock productivity.
Required Job Qualifications :
- Ph.D. in ecology, soil science, ecological simulation, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience in ecological modeling
Preferred Job Qualifications :
- Strong programming skills
- Experience in ecosystem model development or modification
- Experience in plant production and herbivore dynamics
- Experience using the APEX ecosystem model
- Familiarity with northeastern Colorado rangelands
- Strong publication record in ecosystem modeling

Essential Duties :
Job Duty Category : Research
Duty / Responsibility : Improve understanding of spatial and temporal variability in production affecting rangeland dynamics.
- Work with the supervisor and ARS collaborators to refine project goals
- Collate long-term data for use in training the ecosystem model
- Edit the APEX application to better represent ecosystem variability
- Parameterize the APEX model for the Central Plains Experimental Range
- Use the APEX model in scenario analyses
- Create graphical output and spatial products to present results

Job Duty Category : Scientific Presentations and Manuscript Publication
Duty / Responsibility : Communicate results to the scientific community.
- Prepare presentations and present results at scientific conferences
- Prepare no fewer than two peer-reviewed journal manuscripts
- Incorporate input from co-authors into the manuscript
- Submit manuscripts and address reviewer comments
- Resubmit manuscripts if rejected
